View Full Version : Fluorocarbon line for Ice Fishing
What's the recommended brand of Fluorocarbon line for ice fishing?
I plan on using this on the last couple feet of line.
Thanks
I wouldn't use florocarbon line for any ice fishing - leader or not.
I would simply use a good brand of mono. Your color choice. Much less kinky, and much cheaper.
Take care

If you're fishing shallow water, you mite as well spool up with Flourocarbon and take full advantage of it's benefits instead of using it for a leader only.
There are some poor quality Flourocarbons out there and at the top of the list is Berkley Vanish and Stren Flourocarbon. They're not true FC lines and just don't compare to the real deal.
I've used Seagaur FC line for 4 years for ice fishing (2 & 4 lb test)
ad it's worked great and is totally invsible under water.
They offer their regular Carbon Pro and for ice fishing they have Carbon Ice FC lines. Don't be fooled by the labels.....the Carbon Ice is just carbon Pro on a different spool with a higher priced aimed at Ice Fishermen.
$6.99 for 25 or even 50 yards is rediculous .
I've tried most of the top brands and now I use Triple Fish (soon to be Team Fish) Flourocarbon lines.
It's been every bit as good, if not better than the Seagaur and a 125 yd spool of 2-4 or 6 lb test is only $6.59
the triple Fish lines are made in Germany and if you do an research on any fishing lines whether they be Flourocarbon, cofilament or monofilament, the Europeans are years ahed of us in this technology and they sell Flourocarbon lines as a luxury item. It's considered a neccessity and is sold as that at very fair prices where here in the States, it's "Gouge the fishermen" time as soon as something new or effective hits the market.
P-Line and Yozuri also make high quality Flourocarbon lines.
Best bet is to try them for yourself and make a decision.
There isn't a stronger FC line on the market than the 2 & 4 lb Triple Fish FC lines. Knot stength and line strength.
A balanced rod reel outfit makes the lines work even better and most complaints about FC lines come from people who ae using to heavy a line on a micro light rod or vice versa.
A reel with a larger diameter spool alway hepls eliminate what memory the line will develope but you have to remember that Flourocaron lines do nt absorb water like Monos or some of the super braids.
Using FC lne on a reel like a Silstar Tiny 20 or similal micro reels will cause a slight memory problem as their spools are tiny ut if you use a good backing material to semi fill the spool, that problem is mostly eliminated.
The benefits of the FC line are much more important than a minor problem like slight memory. The memory in the line goes away as soon as it gets wet or you can totally eliminate it by spraying your line and spool with Blakemore Reel and line magic.
Experiment and compare !

Flourocarbon is as flaky as sewing threads, invisibility at a cost the fish. Flouro has one glaring problem with it, it stretches and does not "comeback" in other words each stretch the the diameter becomes a little thinner, mono or any line for that matter does but not like that. Beware of any of it below 20lb test, there are quality mono's out there that test stronger with less diameter and are almost as clear. Go with diameter it bends less light, and put's money in your pockets.

I use Seaguar 4# the last couple of feet--tied to fireline.. Am convinced it will catch more fish-tied some on for fishn' buddy last winter and he immediatly started to catch more fish.. Also the strengh is super--I had at least a 30 lb. grass carp up to the hole; after a 30 minute tussle-the S.0.B. looked like a tarpon swimming by the hole..GET some, you'll like it..

Top quality Flourocarbons do not stretch anywhere near as much as mono and they retain their shape, strength and overall ability to remain strong much longer than any mono on the market in comparable pound tests.
You must have been using the Berkely or Stren FC lines and they're garbage barrel fodder. Not true FC line but they boast that it is.
Thanks for helping me not waste my time with certain products!!

Flouro has less of an ability to recover from stretch then any line material out there regardless of brand. Every thing stretches before it breaks, and mono/nylon does a better job of recovering from this then most all other materials. If you have the time to tie a leader on almost every fish and hangup then flouros for you. Stretch a .5 inch wide rubber band until its half of its diameter you can rest assured that it will take a few more "attacks" before breaking and will not extend or lose diameter. With flouro take 3ft of it stretch it to about breaking point and then measure the exact length you now have a little "extra" length and less diameter. Not me.
