Gonna try western basin this weekend with my bro. A few questions:
1) How far out should/could I go in a 18' Lund Alaskan (50hp motor)?
2) Any suggestions on techniques, lures, bait?
3) Coming from northcentral Indiana, where's the best place to put in? We'd need a good bait shop, an inexpensive motel, good landing, etc.
4) Is there a place not too far out in the lake where they're hitting?
Thanks, guys.

What part of Indiana are you from? I am also a Hoosier, Shelbyville. I heard that blue jigs are hot.

You need flares in addition to std safety equip. The bite around Den's area is nearshore and as prev stated he can fix you up. Can help with lodging too.
Another decent choice would be near the islands, the N side of Kelly's is popular, but we've caught quality fish this time of yr almost everywhere around the islands at one time or another. Mazurik near Marblehead is the nearest launch to Kelly's. Trailering the boat by ferry to Kelly's for the day has saved many a trip on rough days. Plenty of lodging in area - Port Clinton isn't too far.
Good Luck,

I would check the weather, there calling for high winds this weekend.
If the winds are NE( like there calling for) you could stay on South bass, and fish the west side. Green and rattlesnake.

Grew up in South Bend. Live in Ft Wayne now.
Had plans to go this weekend, in fact you may have seen the get together that was cancelled because of the storm and the NE wind they are talking about. I think every time I went last year, this was the condition. Got skunked more than I like to admit and my wife is getting suspicious. No fish but boy did we have fun.
Den's Sportsmens Outpost is always a good place, check out the internet on same.
Lodging: Todd at www.plantationmotel.com. Toll free 877-677-2770 is a good reasonable place with individual cabins in Huron. Tell him I recommended. He has always done me good. I will be staying there 8 nites end of May. Also nice bar right across the street and very good dining about 1mi down the road.
We may still go but watching that weather.
Good luck

Troutbeck - I fish out of Meinke Marina, just East of Toledo, it is a 2.5 hour drive from Ft Wayne, fish are 6 miles out right now, you can end up going 12-15 miles in June and July but right now is is a short trip. Lodging is spotty, there is a place called walleye Willys that is very nice to stay but it is usually booked. Email me if you would like phone #s
