Jerry.
In recent years most maufacturers started adding the split rings to their cranks if they thought it neccessary for the lures free moving action. The old wire nosed Rapalas are the only ones I can think of that still come with a bare bent wire on the front. Others have all kinds of connectors or snap swivels to allow the lure the freedom to pulsate or move back and forth.
Adding a split ring to any lure that does not have one, would probably indeed free up it's side to side swimming action. The trade off might be yet another failing point in the line to lure connection, or a loss of dynamics all together. Yet, I've attached split rings on top of split rings to my hook connectors when fishing for river kings. It allows the hooks to be twisted almost around 360 degrees without jamming agains't the cranks body.
Use the split rings, they were put there for a reason.
Use a snap with a rounded end not one with a sharp bend.
Do not use a swivel.
I have heard people tieing direct on original rapalas if casting.

I go with what rapala suggest. rapala knot on the original rapala floater. Very strong knot and it works for me.They give directions on how to tie this knot inside of package.Very easy to do.

I take them all off and use a rounded snap.

I would agree with Dan/OR on this one. I remove the split rings because I prefer to use a round snap for easier lure changing. If you don't like to use a snap then leave the split ring on and tie directly to that.

Chad, I've seen the no swivel advice before. Whats wrong with using snap swivels on cranks? TIA

The rule of thumb for splits rings is if it came with a split ring, attach to that. If it came without one, do not add one.
Seems like the use of snap swivels tends to deaden the action compared to using just a round snap or tieing directly to the lure. The extra pivot point tends to steal some vibration and not allow the lure to give it's best, fullest action.
