Anyone else having trouble running this software on Windows 2000? Funny thing is, I started having the PC freeze up running the application AFTER I registered - therefore I cannot return it for a refund. When I called their Tech Support number, they outright acknowledged that they've had issues with their software and Windows 2000 OS. Now, I'm no marketer, but it seems prudent to me that this might be mentioned to the potential buyer....

I have it installed on my computer at home with windows 98. I do not have that problem on that computer. I did try to install it on my work computer (windows 2000) as well and have had that exact problem. I have the mille lacs version and I have had several different problems, the latest is a problem with printing the GPS coordinants. So far all of my problems have been worked out with a visit or two with the company, except the one of the computer locking up. I have not addressed the issue of it locking up yet. hope you have success.

Before I register mine, are they in the process of fixing the freeze up problem since mine seems to run about 5 to 10 minutes before freezing up. Always when I'm trying to zoom out from a spot.

wwater,
Do you have the Mille Lacs Reelbottom version?
Your not having any problems on Windows 98 only on Windows 2000?
I was planning on buying this version but I'm beginning to wonder if its a good idea.
I had the same problem with the screen freezing up. After I registered it the problem was fixed. It's something they do to make you register.

Tom,
I have been running these maps on my laptop computer for nearly 2 years now. I have had the same problems you suggest. What is frustrating is these maps are the best I've used and when you can't access the data... well you spend a lot more time searching and less time fishing.
I was able to fix the problem by increasing the size of the swap file (or virtual memory) in Windows. This can be done with most of the Windows operating systems from 95 to 2000. I had to set the file size to 128 MB before the lockups stopped. You should also select the Optimize Performance for Applications option. To make these changes yourself, go into the START menu, select SETTINGS->CONTROL PANEL. In the window that comes up, double click on the SYSTEM icon. When the SYSTEM window comes up, select the ADVANCED tab. The settings you need to change are within the advanced tab. I would suggest starting your virtual memory setting at 96 MB and then restart your computer and try the map software again. Depending on how many other apps or utils are running on your company will dictate how large you will have to make this setting.
This should take care of your problems. If you have questions, email me.
Good luck,
Paul Fournier

Has anyone tried running in Compatibility mode? I have been able to get most apps to run under Windows XP Compatability mode. I will try LakeMaps this weekend and let everyone know.
LONG POST!
For Windows 2000 Compatibility Mode, you need to install Service Pack 2 and then execute the following:
Log on as Administrator.
Click Start , and then click Run .
In the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK , where %SystemRoot% is the drive and folder in which Windows is installed:
regsvr32 %systemroot%\apppatch\slayerui.dll
How to Use Compatibility Mode Properties
Log on as Administrator.
Right-click the shortcut, and then click Properties .
Click the Compatibility tab. This tab appears only if the Compatibility-mode interface has been properly enabled on the computer.
Click to select the Run in Compatibility Mode check box to enable Compatibility-mode support for the program.
Click either Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 compatibility mode in the drop-down box.
Click OK to save the changes.
Double-click the shortcut to run the program.
NOTE : Be careful if you use Compatibility mode to bypass version warnings in Setup or installation programs. Some programs are designed for a specific operating system and intentionally prohibit use on future versions. These are most often system-level programs that run at a very low level and have the potential to cause serious problems if installed.
GOOD LUCK!

Tom,
One thing to always check on when buying software is minimum hardware requirements and operating system compatibility. I know this doesn't help you now. Does the lakemaster box state it is compatible with Windows 2000?? If so, then press the tech support group. I would ask to talk to a manager if you can't get the issue resolved with the first line of support.
Wish I could help more!!

Thanks for the tip, though I tried it and it did not change anything. PC continues to freeze up after just a few "zooms" on the map.
i think ron westberg is the guy you need to ask for at the main office. 651-770-1352
he should be more than able to answer any questions you might have from any aspect of the maps or the system.
i sure am glad those trees i use to navigate with, aren't as hard to deal with.

For best all around usage, set your swap file for three times the RAM you have in your system.

Being in the software industry, I know that some applications can have problems with the different OS out there. But I'm sure the developers of these maps are trying to find a fix if indeed there is a problem.
One thing people fon't do, but SHOULD, is make sure that they are running the most current update of Windows. You can get this free by going to www.microsoft.com and using the Autoupdater. I don't have the software you guys are talking about, but many times the problem is a "Windows" problem or a driver problem... that can be solved by the computer user simply keeping the computer up to date. We don't yell at Ford or Chevy when our tires get bald or we need a tune up ;)
Good luck, and I hope this may help somebody. I know how frustrating it can be for software not to work as you expect it to, regardless of where the problem lies.

Windows 98SE and ME but when I upgraded to Windows XP,I lost both of
them. They give me my access code and updated drivers but all I get is
invalid access code.Does anybody have that problem?

I've had the products for over a year now. I started on Windows NT Workstation, and it worked great all the time. After that, I upgraded to Windows 2000 and the problems began, same as everyone else is describing. Last week I upgraded the computer again, this time to Windows XP, and things have never been better. I've talked to the tech support folks, and they confirmed that Win 2000 is a problem that they're working on.
I purchased the the Mille Lacs reelbottom version at the walleye expo in Minneapolis and had immediate problems. When I called tech support they said they were aware of the problems and working on a patch to download from the website. My question is why are they still selling this map if they know it has problems. I think they should fix the software and pull the defective CD's before others are stuck with this headache. Mine is going back and I'll wait for the revised version.
The problem, it would seem to me, is limited to Windows 2000, and they say they are working on a fix. Most people seem to use the software fine. I'm sure that they would refund the money for people who are having problems. Because a piece of software is not working on one particular OS, that does not necessarily make it defective. Trust, me, Microsoft is more to blame for many, many alleged "defects" in other developer's software :)
Sorry to sound like such of defender, as I have nothing to do with the company, but I know software, and getting software to run universally all OS and all systems is tougher than most people think. No (good) company intentionally puts out apps that do not work - except MS ;)

At the very least they should warn of incompatability with Windows ME. They don't list any system requirements or limitations.

Yes it is the reelbottom version. I hate to discourage you from getting it because it is the best maps I have ever seen or heard of. However there are some serious issues with win 2000 and the compatibility of this software.
