I was reading an earlier post about things people have done to make you glad you brought them along on your fishing outing. Made me think about some of the times I went out with my father and got me wondering about any other family fishing traditions you people might have had.

I have gone out with my father since I was way too young to remember. I always got to reel in "the big one" that he always hooked. To this day, I am still trying to figure out why he always caught fish, and I ended up catching weeds, sticks and other crap off the bottom :) Not much of a "tradition", but something I will surely do for my kids... We went on local lakes by our house and eventually made it up to Canada a few times. Great memories and stories to tell.

I hope that with the new changes to the Minnesota DNR regulations regarding entering fish houses people won't take this opportunity to "cheat". (just my plug on that topic) Further- I hope that your family traditions will not be infringed upon because of any recent changes to our society as a whole (9/11). Remember- it is still the opinion of many that the times spent with family/friends makes the experience.

one family tradition i fondly remember and continue to see today is attending the annual sportshow. i remember walking with my dad, holding tightly to his hand, as we crossed the busy big city streets to get to the auditorium and the big sportshow. my eyes would light up when we entered the arena full of exhibits and boats. then we would sit at home and go through all the treasured brochures we gathered. years later, i took my boys across those same streets and watched them feel the same tradition i learned to appreciate. sportshows open the door to anticipation for our great sport for the kids especially. making it an annual event will surely be passed on.

With my brother, my Dad and my Dad's buddy (I hope he lasts for one more spring...), we listen to George Burns and Robert Woodpecker (Whittacker) while out in the boat fishing for walleye or crappie in the spring. Been that way since I was 12 and able to go on the first "real fishing trip". Have been there about every spring since (22 years now) in addition to fishing with my Dad about once a week if not more in the summer.

In the summer, when fishing with my bro in the morn, there is always a stop to get 2 jugs of gatorade and 2 apple persians :) Can't fish without it.

Now duck hunting, that's where even more family/friend traditions go on. Telling the same stories and same jokes for years, and they never get old :)
