I'm new to buying/using a baitcasting reel, what is a flipping switch used for and how do you use it?
Thanks for helping me out!

On a baitcast reel without a flippin' switch, when you push down on the thumb bar,you put the reel in freespool, as when casting or letting line out. You must then turn the crank to "lock" the reel back up. On a baitcast reel with a flippin' switch and the little switch turned on,you push down the thumb bar to freespool the reel, and when you release the thumb bar, the reel automaticly locks up. You don't need to turn the crank to lock up the reel.It makes for easy one handed fishing, like when backtrolling while jigging over a lake bottom that changes depth often. I hope this helps.

Flipping switch allows you to control the release of the line on the spool. When you normally cast, you press the thumbbar and cast. Then you have to crank to reset the line coming into the reel. When you cast in the flipping stage and release the thumbbar, the reel is already locked into the cranking mode. This works for bass as they will hit and spit in a second when they feel the hook as it hits the water. With the flipping switch, they have no time to spit as the line is already tight and the hook is set. I have reels with and without the flipping switch. I don't use it for walleyes at all. And since I don't fish that much for bass, I rarely use it. Hope this helps.

Flipping switch is a must have when pulling spinners with bottom bouncers. Hit the thumb bar when deeper, let go, you set... dont have to mess with two hands. It is also easier to set the hook if the fish hits on the way down.
