View Full Version : How many fish plastic shad baits ??
Just curious if some of you guys fish plastic shad baits, I see Berkley has their Power Shad and most other grub manufacturers seem to have their own shad version as well. Do most just fish them with lead heads and what kind of success do you have using this bait. Any recommendations for brands that have treated you well? Thanks for the help..

Never tried one, but there was a good article on them in the Walleye Insider that just came out. I will pick up a few and give them a try this year.

I use alot of jig and plastic combo's for Pike and Walleye, including Sassy Shads. I fish alot from shore and I can swim a 1/4 oz jig and Sassy shad thru the rocks and not sweat loosing them. Besides being economical they work! Not just on Walleyes either. I have been using a bait called the Shad Assasin the last few years and it has a nice swimming action. I save my expensive cranks for when I fish out of a boat.

I have been using Bass Assassin Shad jerkbaits for a long time now. This was before they started making baits specifically for the walleye market. I tend to use these on the Detroit where I will put them on a big jig, and attach a stinger as well. You can read more about this in an upcoming issue of In-Fisherman magazine.

I have used the Power Shad baits for a year or so, and really like them. I find the Power bait formula seems to work better than the unscented baits. The Power Shads are expensive though, so here is what I do. I buy the Dart N'Shads from Janns Netcraft by the 100's and put 8 - 10 of them in a plastic ziplock with some walleye scent, and microwave them for 10 seconds, roll them around in the bag, let them cool for a minute or so, and do it again. The eyes love them, especially in the river. I do this with ringworms also. If you buy them from Jann's, 100 shad cost $15.00 and ringworms cost $7.00 a hundred. If you use the Power Baits, it would cost twice as much. This works for me, but it takes a little time. That's why we have winter, so we can do these things, make rigs, jigs, and rods...:7

I like the Berkley Power Shads and the SW version the Power Pogy. They both produce well on walleye.
I even use shads that go 5" for walleye, big for most situations, but not all.
Cheaper by the 100 for sure.

Eddy,
The Dart n" Shads from Janns come in 4 and 5 inch. I like to bite off about an inch off the head end of the 4 inchers, then they are just right........;)

I think that is one of the best tips I have ever read here!!
I called the bait I use a Shad Assasin in my earlier post, I meant Walleye Assasin. I like the chartruese glitter with a orange tail and the silver glitter with a chartruese tail.

Have any of you guys used any of the Magnum Squirmin Shads from Bass Pro Shops? They are 7" long and have the big Lazer eye's. I have only fished them a couple of times so far but Pike seem to like them alot!!

I have fished with them for many years with a great deal of success all over the midwest , canada etc (in places where there are no natural shad )most brands work well but if you can find them "lucky strike " shads are made of a much softer plastic and have the very best action , some of the other brands eg. mister twister need to be modified a bit to get them to wiggle right , My buddies and I fish them on lead heads and change up with twisters and power grubs until we discover what they want ,they work best in the rivers (mississipi north of the cities , crow wing etc. ) they are really effective in small rivers below dams , rock falls etc. The smaller 1/12 and 2" are excellent crappie baits (I took an 8 lb walleye on a 1 1/2 black and white on an 1/16 orange jig ,4lb test rapala finese line while fishing for crappie last summer ), the best walleye colors are yellow with black back , bluish white (not blue) with black back , having tried all the colors out there save your money and just by the two I meantioned the glows and florecesnt colors do not seem to work very well . the 2 and 3inch seem to work best for eyes the smaller ones are generally better for crappies.

Hey craigm,
Where do you find these "Lucky Strike" shads? I don't use these shad swimmers as much as I used to because I couldn't get the action I wanted at a slow enough speed.

WAeyes - The Lucky Strike brand shads are purchased where ever I could find them I did pack in a pretty good supply at the Bass Pro Shop in Springfield (Lucky Strike was located in Cassville MO , sorry that is all the address I have ) I have purchased the same or similar shads from a company called Hog Hunter Manufacturing the address on the packages I have is 3623 Niles-Carver Road , Mineral Ridge Ohio 44440 phone 216-652-3244 they sell them under the name "pro worms " shad . I also purchased some at the Kansas City sport show last year from a outfit called " minnesota tackle co " ( the brand name on them was "rattle snake ")it is a KC sports store that has nothing to do with Minnesota ( I asked )I think that they are all made by the same outfit and then resold with different brand names if you put them side by side I can not tell the difference but they are alot softer than the Pogie or the twister. I hope that helps you out If I find a better adress or a shop here in Minnesota that carries them would you like me to e-mail the info to you ? my e-mail ad is , cjmachardy@highlandservices.com

Try trolling one ahead of a Shad Rap or other crankbait. I just tie a dropper loop 30" ahead of bait and add the shadbait. Gets you a little extra depth and you would be surprised how many fish hit it rather than the hard bait. Usually I try to match the size of the two baits, but sometimes go smaller with the plastic to give the impression the crankbait is 'chasing' something.
