Is anyone using a different line release other than the one it comes with? I have been wrapping the line(10lb fireline) around the release, just wondering if there is another release that people are using.

I agree with Steve. The OR-16's are the way to go with mono. The newer ones have a peg in the middle of the pad so the line wont come off, just slide a bit.

Do a search of the archives. There has been many posts about them.

I use OR-18 releases no slip what so ever with fireline 14lb test.
There are two settings on the releases, I position the latch towards the board for easy removal when a fish is on. Forward position seems to be more difficult to remove but that is just my opinion.

I switched all mine to OR18's last fall, after using the pinned OR16. They worked great, but some people had trouble getting them open far enough, especially with cold hands.

I've seen nothing but advantages with the OR18's except for the cost. Whew, tattle flags and new clips and the boards get "REAL" pricey!

The OR-18 is also known as the Snapper release. It was designed specifically for the Superlines. I have used them with Fireline for the last three years and had NO problems with them at all. As was noted in one of the above postings, there are two ways to set the release clip. Forward locks the line onto the release so it cannot possibly come off the line and back "could" allow for the possble release of the board off of the line. The release tension is fully adjustable to tighten the urethane pad tighter to the opposite grooved side of the release so that a premature release would be Highly unlikely. I liked to set the tension just tight enough to hold the board so that it does not slide down to the lure. This makes it easier to get the boards off the line after you hook up a fish.

Ok, I'll go against the grain. While I've heard great things about the new Dunn/Off-Shore release with the pin, they were never available locally last year so I continue to use the tried and true Church clips. The Church tackle clips are fantastic. So good, we switch them on to the Off Shore boards.

Either way, good luck.

Todd, funny you should mention the Church clips. I got a good price on some used Roach boards with the Church clips so I'll be trying them this summer. I hope they hold as well as I think they will. I have heard nothing but good things about them. Any tips to go with those boards. Not too many people ran them around here. I am going to hook a second clip on the back of the board, probably an Offshore since I've got plenty of them around.

Switched all my off shore clips to Church Clips. I have not had a problem with fireline since. I try to keep it simple, so when I find what works for me I stick with it so I can improve the other problems I face in this trolling game. Try the church clips you will love them. JJ

Without a doubt the OR-18 "Snapper" release is the best to use for supelines. I have boards rigged with them just for that purpose. When using boards for hard striking fish where I want it to break away in the front I was using the older OR-16 red releases. Now Off Shore Tackle has now come out with a Heavy Duty release without the pin in the center, it has an orange color to it, and is called the OR-19 release. Check them out at one of the boats shows!
