We caught a fish like that at Bay de Noc a few years ago. I asked a DNR guy at the ramp about it. He said they get these warts from rubbing up against each other while competing for food. The warts will eventually go away. That's what he told me anyway.

Jaren,
We caught one like that Thursday up in Augres. From everything that I've read the are supposed to be OK to eat. I just can't get myself to keep one that looks like that. I've seen fishing videos from Canada and the fish had these warts on them. Also caught them in Munnuscong Bay in the UP with warts. So I don't believe that it's just in the Saginaw bay that we have this problem. I'd just keep doing what you are doing and toss them back.

It's most likely just lymphocystis. It's a somewhat common viral condition in warmer water walleye. Remove the affected area and you can prepare the fish as normal. It is not contageous to people.

[b]Bigfish is right.
It's a virus and not some Nuclear or Chemical spill accident. It is spread by contact when the fish rub agains't each other mainly during the spawning runs. This virus, even though grotesque is only on top of the skin and does not reach it's way into the flesh of the fish.

[b]Jaren.
I never thought I'd see a post for somebody looking for weeds on the Bay. ;-)

Cross'n'eyes has it right. There are also weeds probably 8 feet long growing in 10 feet of water south of Hoyles. Just head over to that SW corner of the Bay. Also, pleanty of them along the Southern shore from the Saginaw River to Plumb Island near the Quanicassee River mouth. Also pleanty on the South side of the Man-made Island at the Saginaw River mouth. I personally hate all the new weeds we have since the zebra mussels.
