I got this email this morning, from my "winter Texan parents" and thought maybe someone out there might know where he can find these:

(his email to me..)

Hi Kiddo,
In the South, fly fisherpersons use large sponge siders, called "bream killers". They are the nonfloating variety. Searched the internet to no avail, and asked Jack (my brother, not my dog..;-)) to look but sometimes he's too busy. Ask your cohorts if they know....spiders are almost 2" across...including legs.

It's early am, park is asleep, days are quieter lately...less wind...guys are catching 3-5# bass on artificials...and catfish among the bream...look like panfish but are very yellow. I always get fishing fever this time of year, but by the time spring comes in WI , other things get my attention.

Papasan

So, does anyone know where he might find these special spiders? I have only seen the floating kind.

Thanks much...

Juls

I think I seen them in the Bass Pro master cataloge Juls?

They are populer among southern crappie and bream fisherman.

Not 100% sure and I can't find my BP cataloge yet, still looking.

Hey Eddy,
If you find your book....
Could you look and see and tell me the catalog number, the page they are on, and the BPS phone number? I'll have pops call them if you find them. I know he doesn't have their catalog down there in Texas.

Thanks buddy!

If you can't find them, from what you describe, I would wonder if a commonly tied fly would be the ticket. Check out a fly called a bithc Creek. It has rubber band legs as you described and the body is usally a varigated chenille. I tried to find a link for you to see it, but couldn't find one. However, any fly shop that has a decent selection of flies should have it, or will at least know what it is. This is a very easy fly to tie.

When I was searching, I found another interesting fly, this one is more of a slider, but check it out here: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/horizontal-item.jhtml?id=0011653312596a&navAction=push&navCount=19&indexId=cat380003&podId=0011653&catalogCode=IC&parentId=cat380003&parentType=index&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fcatalog%2Fitem-link.jhtml_A&_DAV=001165331259
YEESH! That was quite the copy/paste. Go into Cabela's website, go into fly fishing, go flies, then go into the warmwater flies and search there.

Thanks for your help guys! I emailed the link you gave Scott. I hope it's what he's looking for. It doesn't say on that page if those are sinking spiders or floaters. Seems to me if something is made of sponge it's going to float...but ya just never know...lol

Thanks again!
Juls

I would think that they float also. Here is another link that shows one but doesn't say if it sinks.

Some of the floating sponge flies will sink if you hold them underwater, squeeze and release them. Waterlogged, they sink. It's worth a try.

If the flies float you can possibly use soft lead wiring around parts of the bord to sink it or use sinking compound. I know around here in colorado they sell "skining compounds" for floating flies. Never used it but it sounds like if worse comes to worse you can use that stuff.
