Is the chip for Bay De Noc pretty accurate or are there still problems with the chip?

Before I purchased my last two chips, I went on line to see if I could save some serious money since the chips are rather costly. I did find acouple of fishing stores that would sell them to me about $15 less than MSRP, but by the time you factored in shipping (They come packaged in a rather large box) I found out I wasn't saving that much. I ended up calling Navionics and ordering them thru the company with the knowledge that, if I were to have a problem, (which I did with one of them) that I could go right back to the manufactuer, to have it resolved. I'm glad that I did that because Jeff at Navionics was a great guy and sent me a replacment chip right away so as not to ruin my pre-planned fihing trip. Good Luck and Great Fishing....Capt. Jerry

Youd have to go with the classic. The gold upgrade is only available for the colored graphs. The only difference is the gold has a better color feature and a help menu.It wont work on the x15mt.

What about Bay de Noc accuracy? I am curious as well.

Been using the chip for a few years with no problems. I'd guess that a new one has updates that I do not have ( maybe further coverage) but I love mine.

Dennis

Are the rock plies that have sheared a few pwt lower units well marked on the Navionics maps? If there are some unmarked ones I'd like to know before wot because I seem to have a love affair with them also!

thanks!

What is up with the multiple number of motor/ rock encounters occuring on the PWT event? Are the reefs not marked?

Going up for the MWC event..first time up there...more butterflies for the stomach.

Chip is fine.

If it's your first time on Bay de Noc........ BEWARE. The water is extremely low, so you need to compensate water depth off the map.

PLUS, some shorelines extend WWWWWWWWWAAAAAYYYY out further than you think with 1-2 foot of water.

Take a boat ride before fishing to get accustomed to your new surroundings. Don't cut corners there.

Thank you Dennis. How low is the lake below map levels on a calm day?

Thanks again

Dennis is right about the water levels! There are points that come out under water off the shore lines that extend out into the bay a good 1/4 mi. This is especially true in the Black Bottom area on both the West and East sides of the bay.

The dept's of water over the upper bay reefs as of last fall were only 3-4' on some so I would imagine that with the water being lower this season you could encounter some rocks.

The Navionics chips is quite accurate! However, remember that what the chart indicates and what is actually there are often two different things. Use it as a guide to get an idea of what lies ahead. Wind direction will often drop the bay level or raise it depending on it's velocity and direction.

As far as launching, Gladstone should be fine just stay in the channel. Kippling may be a bit shallow if you are fishing in a bigger boat. I didn't have any problems last fall in a ProV 2025. You will have to lay a good trail of cookies going out into the bay here as the reef in front of the launch extends a good 1/4 mi into the bay. Use the chart and leave icons to follow. At night it's sometimes tricky to get in. You can see the lights of the launch but you can't get there from where you are without running aground. It's a long way to the bouy that marks the entrance to the channel. Escanaba launch should be fine to, as it has a deep channel.

Good luck and post your success. I can't wait till Nov. to get back up there.

Fishingdog,

Since Saginaw is part of Lake Huron, you could get chip US652XL LAKE HURON which includes the ENTIRE LAKE HURON INCLUDING GEORGIAN BAY. It was updated in Mar 2003.

Is this what you're looking for?

Franks Great Outdoorsin Linwood carries the Navionics chips. The One dennis is referring to, the 625 XL covers all of Lake Erie, the Detroit River, up north to Past the Thumb in Lake Huron including Saginaw Bay, certainly ALOT of walleye water in one chip. I fished the PWT at Escanaba last week with the Lake Michigan XL chip and found it to be very accurate as far as structure goes, but the water levels seemed to be about 2 feet off. If you launch out of Escanaba you won't have any problems. Cedar River is very shallow and when going out you must stay right of the red buoys, BIG ROCKS!
Good Luck, Great Fishing!

I believe the rock pile that messed up PWT boats was located down by the Cedar River, not actually in Bay de Noc. Also, most of the PWT guys didn't get their chips until the last minute, Thursday before the tournament, and the damage had already been done.

The rock pile I hit 4+ miles north of Cedar river isn't on the XL map and isn't marked. The Green Bay map doesn't have much in contours except for the bigger reefs. The map was pretty acurate in the Bay de noc's though but a little shallower than marked.

The rock I hit was about 1-1 1/2 miles off shore with very little warning. There may be an undamaged SS 23" prop sitting there (attached to the rest of my lower unit) if anybody gets brave enough to try and find it. I tried but it was too rough while I was there.

I'd say that is pretty close. There is another shallow point just north of there that could be it also.

Does the Hotspot's map also cover Big Bay de Noc? How far south does it show?
