Any pro's or cons to this line?

Great stuff for running Dipseys / Jets. We used the 40 pound test with 10 pound diameter on Erie.

Just curious Steve, why so heavy? Why wouldnt you use 20lb for example and get the benefits of an even thinner line?
The reason I ask is we are discussing this on www.glangler.com

PJ,
Couple reasons...
1) I use the same reels for Salmon on Lake Ontario and believe/hope that someday I'm gonna tangle with another 40 pound plus king and I don't want to come up on the short end of the stick. I actually use 50 pound test whiplash with the diameter of 12 pound braid now. (used the 40/10 Gorilla Braid in the past)
2) To a certain extent the extra "benefits" of an even thinner line become more of a problem once you go to line less than 8 pound diameter. The thinner stuff like 6 pound diameter Spiderwire braid really can get in some nasty tangles that you cant unravel like the thicker stuff. I fish a lot in the western basin and near shore areas off Lorain, Vermillion, Huron so I fish in a lot of water less than 40 feet. With the really thin stuff, you can almost get too deep too quick.
3) Most of the people I normally share fishing info with use either 8, 10, 12 pound diameter. I know what most of them run so I can add some length to their lead lengths if it is someone running 8 pound or 10 pound line to compensate for my 12 pound diameter line. One guy has the 6 pound diameter spiderwire braid and his lead lengths are always considerably shorter than mine.
4) I used to get good deals on the 40/10 Gorilla Braid and I got a good deal on the 50/12 whiplash. All my reels are filled with the same stuff so they are consistent and high quality line. Because I use the same stuff for salmon fishing I put a MINIMUM of 1000 feet of the good stuff on my reels, so a deal factors into the equation when filling 20 reels.
5) I tend to go overkill on most everything... (the real reason!)

Cant argue with any of those reasons.
Makes me feel smarter that I just picked up a spool of 50lb Power Pro for my dipsy rods for our salmon trip next week.

I use 30#/8 dia. Stealth. 2 reasons for not going thinner:
1. The Detroit River snags - too expensive. I rarely lose a lure anymore, even jigs.
2. Multi-species fishing. I'll start off jigging for eyes, shoot out toward the lake looking for perch, hit a few hot-spots for bass and pike on the way in and out, then troll for eyes when it gets dark. Some occasional muskie fishing here and there also. I use the same line for everything, 2 casting rods and 2 trolling rods. If I had to keep a specific set-up for all the species I may target on one trip, I'd have 10 rods in the boat.
My next baitcaster rod may be one with interchangeable spools though. I'd like not only to keep different test/dia. of line available, but different colors also.

Ebi,
If you know of anyplace that you can still buy the 40/10 Gorilla Braid in the 300 yard or preferably bigger spools please send me an email.
Thanks,
Steve
