I've got a couple of handlining reels that I need to re-spool with wire. My question is what kind to buy, and where to get it the cheapest? What # test is the best? 45# or 60#? My Redcaps still have the old copper line on them and they are starting to get weak and frayed. Is the nylon coated stuff better than plain braided wire? How about some input from all of you Detroit riverrats! Thanks

60# coated "Mason" line. It comes in 200' spools.

I agree with Juls, 60 lb Mason coated is the most popular. I myself use 90lb, I find it a bit easier on the hands, since I dont like wearing a glove all the time. I use one of those leather fingers instead. Also if you fish the Detroit River a lot like I do, the extra test comes in handy when you snag.
I get it at Andys, all the places around seem to have it at about the same price.

I agree with Perchjerker the heavier line is easier to grip, less likely to break if you get snagged, and as know the Detroit River is full of snags !!! I don't use a glove or leather finger, but have a problem with carpal tunnel especially in my right hand so I switched to the left side of the boat and use my left hand more now.

propkiller, the smaller diameter 45# wire will give you better feel for different bottom types and your line angle will be shallower than the 60# or 90#, but it is harder to hold and harder on the hand. I've used 45# non-coated for one season but was buying bandaids by the bulk, now i use "coated" 45#. If your going to fish heavy current with deep water say 40 feet or more i'd go with 45# coated otherwise 60# coated would be a good choice. Its still personall preferance.
