Is it better to tie the hook/lure directly to Fireline or use a short length of mono(if so,what lenght) between hook/lure and Fireline?

I tie jigs on to fire line but you should use a palmer knot. It seems to work the best for me.

If the waters not real clear or the fish aren't real fussy , I'll tie directly with a palomar like eyeswon said . If it is or they are i'll add a leader . If jigging I'll use a uni knot to tie them together , just make sure you double the fireline side of it (Smaller diameter) . If jigging spoons or trolling I go with a barrel swivel normally .

Sorry , forgot length , usually 2-4 feet . Two for barrel swivel .

If you are attaching cranks or harnesses for trolling tie on a crosslock snap with a ROUND end. Then you can switch lures much easier and efficiently. If tying to a jig or hook you can tie direct with the palomar knot as suggested. The Fireline has a much smaller diameter anyway than matching test mono. If you insist on tying in a leader and the added knots involved use the Uni-to-Uni knot. You do not have to double up the Fireline because of the diameter difference. This knot is tied by cinching the line back on itself and therefore the harder you pull the tighter it gets. It can't slip out.

Hey supertroller, you are exactly right, at least that has been my experience. I have used firelins for about 4 years, and do just as you have said for those applications respectively, and have had no problems. Tim # 548
