Karp,
I own 2 different Pflueger reels. One is a Trion (cheap Cabelas combo) and its a decent rod and reel combo for the money. I bought it to loan when people I take fishing don't have there own decent stuff. Most guys I take fishing bring equipment that is just too heavy for the type of fishing I do. I also use the rod/reel (trion) from time to time and have to say its was a great value for the money. Also I have a Solara and I think it is a great all around reel also for the price. It has never shown to have any trouble and both reels were worth the money. I have over 25 rods and reels and the majority are within 3-4 years old. I love to try different combinations of rods and reels and see whats best for different price ranges.
If your talking dollars and sense, then I would put more money into the rod then anything else. A great rod will make fishing MUCH better where a bad rod can not make a great reel do anything but be junk.
Right now my favorite combo I have is the most expensive combo I have. A rod builder friend built me a rod using a St. Croix Legend Elite rod blank. I mated a Shimano Sustain 1000 on it and I have to tell you that it is night and day better then anything Ive ever used. Had to save my pennies to buy the reel but wow is it ever awesome. After you have a setup like this its hard to use anything else on your rod rack. (luckily I live in a state where I can use 3 rods at once!) Motto- I got what I paid for. But you can find a lot of rods and reels that will make you happy for less $$$.
