View Full Version : Cabela's XCR or Guidewear?
I've narrowed it down to XCR and Guidewear, now I need your 'expert' opinions.
There have been very good reviews on this board regarding the Guidewear, but I have yet to see anything about XCR...
Thanks, Turk.

Seems to me you have answered your own question..;-)
Go with the Guidewear, you won't be disappointed, and you'll stay DRY!

Go with the guideswear. It is a lot heavier and a lot tougher than the xcr, and I have not heard any good reviews about the xcr.

Guidewear! I was in the same dilema last year. I called and talked to Cabela's tech line. Guidewear is much more durable than the XCR. After talking to the tech it wasn't a question at all. He was very straight forward about both products. Seemed to know them well.

Hi -
Any suggestions on the Guidewear size wise for a woman? and I thought I read earlier about insulated vs unisulated - or does this only come one way? How about length - I'm 5'2"?

Turk,
Buy the Guidewear now, you will probably end up with a set of each if you buy the XCR first. I have had a set of guidewear for 4 seasons and it is showing little if any signs of wear. I fish Lake of the Woods alot and use it quite often. Just my two cents worth.
Take care and good fishing,

They make womens Guidewear.
I wouldn't get the insulated for your first set. Too limiting. The regular are sized generously enough to layer underneath and are actually a bit heavy in hot weather.
Better to have and not need than to need and not have!

Guidewear all the way. I myself went thru all the rain gear and finally got smart and bought the best. You will stay dry even at 40 mph.

Thanks - We'll probably drive down to Cabela's some weekend after fishing is over and hopefully get a couple sets.

Last week Cabela's -Mitchell, SD had a sales add in the Sioux Falls Argus Leader on Wednesday for non insulated jackets or bibs - $129 ea.
Sorry, i didn't catch the sales dates- I think it was through Feb. 23rd (But, don't quote me.)

tj1n,
I'm planning to head up to Mitchell from Omaha on 2/24 with intentions of buying a set of guidewear. After you posted about the sale Cabelas was having on their guidewear last weekend, I called their Mitchell store and the guy I talked with knew nothing about it. If you have a chance, could you dig out their ad in the Argus Leader and post back details of the ad, including actual price, good thru date, etc. I went to the Argus Leader website and only could find an ad for Cabelas boat show starting 2/22. I really want the guidewear and don't want to miss out on such a good price. TIA

Hogslammer,
The Cabela's store in East Grand Forks had the same ad and sale in last Thursday's Fargo Forum. It shows a picture of the Guidewear jacket and bibs with prices starting at $129.95 for each. Says you will save $100.00 on a set. Un-insulated only, with big and tall sizes being slightly higher. Sale ends February 19, 2002 their phone number is 1-218-773-0282. It also states that these prices are only available at the retail stores.
Hope this helps,
Take care and good fishing,
Bob M
I just went to "Cabelas" website and pulled up the "Guidewear" and the price they show online is the $119 ea. price as the ad reflected. You can order online for this price however, it did indicate that they were out of the tall sizes.
Here I copied this right from their site:
Cabela's Guidewear GORE-TEX Jacket On sale! Item: OC-920070
Reg. Price: $179.95
Sale Price: $119.95
Good Luck,
Travis Joritz
I bought the Jacket and Bibs from the Mitchell store last night($129.95/ea), plus shipping.
I didn't see the jacket on their web site until I did a search on 'guidewear'. Jackets list online for $119.95, but I didn't see any bibs for that price. They had 'tall bibs', but nothing for folk like me(vertically challenged).
Look for me on Mille Lacs during downpours!
Thanks for all of your help!!

Today I spoke with Grace at the Michell Cabelas and she confirmed that the Guidewear Jacket(not parka) and bibs are on sale for $129.95 each through Feb 19. These are not discontinued models, but the current gear out of their catalog. Looks like I need to get up there this weekend to save myself $100. Now I'll be able to upgrade and also get that new Loomis rod I've been eyeballin. Please don't tell my wife, she thinks I'm going to just look around and buy a few fathead jigs.

Make sure your life jacket fits before you go out and need it.
