View Full Version : trailer hitch
I seem to remember a post some time back that discussed class II hitches vs. step bumper hitches. I have a step bumper hitch on my explorer eddie bauer and it has handled my 1660 pro v with a 50 hp motor just fine. What were the reasons for switching to a class II hitch??

There may be no reason, depending upon the quality of the step bumper. A relative once had one that was rated like a class III hitch. I looked at the mounting, and it was really a heavy duty receiver with a big chrome face.
If yours isn't attached to the main part of the frame, it's only a bumper, and a receiver hitch is much more secure.

Along the same lines, I have a 1997 Explorer XLT with the bumper hitch and am searching for a quality class III receiver type hitch.
I have an opportunity to by a factory original Ford receiver for $69. Does this sound like an alright price. Have any of you had problems with the factory Ford receiver type hitches?
