How much mono does a person need as a backing for braided line

The mono serves two purposes when using it as a base for braided line:

1. As filler for spool space. Since superlines (braids and fused lines) are so much thinner than their equivalent line test in mono, it takes a lot more of it to fill the spool. Much cheaper to use lower cost mono as a base and then fill the spool to within 1/8" ofthe edge with the superline. So part one to the answer is to use just enough to let the braid fill the reel.

2. The reason for a mono base is that the superlines don't grip the spool very well and if there is no mono base, it will never seat on the spool and will just spin. In this case you only need a few yards (cover the inner spool). The mono will grip the spool and the superline will have a solid seating and the reel's drag will work right. If you have lots of superline or money ;-), use as little mono as you can. I'm sure Berkly will not mind.
