Most people use 10 # mono, so that it matches up with the charts in the Precision Trolling book.
My favorites are:
Berkley (Trilene)XT 10# .014" dia
Berkley Sensation in the 12# (10# diameter eqivalent)
Power Pro 30# (8# diameter eqivalent)

Those 47's are going to hold A LOT of mono. I've been using Berkley Big Game line for my trolling applications for several years, and haven't had any issues with it. It's extremely cheap, and has a lot of stretch, which I want when trolling.

Wallbash, Strongly recommend Berkley 10lb XT for a few reasons. One was already mentioned above in that the Precision Trolling Guides utilize 10lb line as their base references. This will eliminate re-calibration and make easier decisions on line-out...feet down choices. The second is I've found that 10lb XT runs my cranks the best or "truest". The 10lb XT also offers a little more stretch than the sensation counterpart which is vital in trolling applications. Might not be a bad idea to use a glass rod vs. graphite. I've been using the St. Croix glass for 3 years now in both 7' and 8' lengths (prefer 7' on flatline and 8' on boards). As far as the amount of line used in all honesty you will only need to "load" the reel once. When you plan on re-spooling don't take off all of the old line. Take off about 200 yrds and add the new line to the existing "backer" spool. Hope this helps.

I like using Berkley Sensation in the 12#. The Precision book uses 10 pound as a reference but the most critical number is the diameter. The book says 10 pound with a diameter of .013, 12 pound sensation is .013 diameter. This gives me a bit stronger line than traditional 10 pound but I still have the exact diameter the book uses as a reference.

Another vote for Scotts setup, that is my exact order of things depending on situation with the exception that I run Big Game 12# instead of the Sensation.

Anyone using Iron Silk for trolling? Looking for a hi-vis mono and I see it is available in solar mint.

Used the Iron Silk for about 6 months, seemed to weaken very quickly compared to Big Game or XT. Went back to the XT Solar and Big Game Solar, they both held up better.

All of my line is HI VIS, if I think it is spooking the fish I'll blood knot a 6 foot or more leader of fluorocarbon on.

Never had to do that yet, but for tourneys my superstitions may get the better of me. ;)

Good luck,

The same holds true for 12# original Stren. Same diameter a 10# XT.

I use 20lb Fireline on 10lb Big Game backer.

The 47's hold a ton of line that you would use for walleye trolling. I'd suggest you find some cheaper mono and use that for backing or else you'll be forking out a lot of dough for 10# to fill them. Then I'd finish filling the spool with about 200yds of 10# mono in either Berkley Big Game, XT, or Stren Orig. 10#. The Trolling bible is made for all line .013 in diameter regardless of brand. However, the line you'll want to use should be fairly abrassion resistant, have a fair amount of stretch and still be supple enough to allow crankbaits to move freely in the water. I don't think you'll go wrong with any of the above.
