How will snap weights effect the dive curve of say a deep diving shad rap? Say a 1 ounce snap weight will take a non diving lure to 10 feet, on a deep diving lure would the dive curve start at that point. I would like to run some # 5 raps at about 20 ft and don't want to use leadcore. Can this be accomplished? Thanks.

If you get the most current version of "Precision Trolling" you will find a section in there about snap weights. In general, a snap weight (1 oz) placed 20 feet ahead of the diving crankbait will add about 33% (if memory serves me correctly) to the stated depth for the amount of line you have out. For example, if a #8 shad rap on fireline runs 13 feet with 70' line out, it will run about 17.5' with a 1 oz snap weight added 20' in front of the lure.
There are so many variables, nothing can replace a little time spent on the water trying different combinations.
You just happened to ask about a combination I have done myself. I used 1.5 Oz, trolling at 1.7 mph, 50 ft in front of the crank, with an additional 50 feet out (the 50:50 method)and reached 18-19 ft with a #5 shad on 14 lb Fireline. I'm far from an expert with the approach, but I did catch fish with the presentation! Good fishing.
