It is unclear to me ... does the 182 come with any memory card.
Also, what is the best memory size purchase (and not the response that bigger is always better please).
Thanks.

Hi! I just bought and used my new Garmin 182. It did not come with a chip.

Do you need a memory card to record waypoints? I have the 178 ordered and am starting to wonder if I made a mistake. I have a bluechart chip coming with it. I gotta believe the unit is going to have some internal memory...Right??

They do not come with a card but you should be able to pick one up pretty cheap these days. A 128MB card should only be about $45 (+/-)

I got a good deal from a contact I made on Ebay and it came with a Garmin 64 MB card so I cant answer your question as to the other generic cards.
Misunderstood your question.

What kind of card is it then. SD, compact flash?

you can buy "preprogrammed" map chips for specific areas or buy the Bluechart disc for the PC. The disc allows you to pick your map(s) and download them onto a memory card of your choice - 64 or 128 MB. there is a fee per map area. You can keep changing chips when you change fishing locations or download several onto a bigger (128 MB) card and be done with it.
I'm not exactly sure how it all works - mine just came out the box.

The one chip or the equivalent "unlock" from the Bluechart disc covers most all of Erie/Detroit river/Lake Huron into the Oscoda area.
Many people would not ever need any more than this one chip but the Bluechart disc/memory card combo isnt much more $$ if you shop around

Yea, I know that.
My question is are those cards your are downloading onto just standard memory cards you buy at Comp USA for $45.Or are they are special cards made for the Garmin units. It is my understanding that they are special cards, not the kind, say, a digital camrea uses.

The 182 will record waypoints up to 3000 without a card.

Brian, I can't remember if it's a SD (secure digital) or MMC card that you use in the Garmin units. If it says SD then you can use either one. If it states MMC, then only an MMC will fit. I believe the SD card is .7 mm thicker (or something like that) and therefore will not fit the slot.
Yes , they are the same ones you can buy at Comp USA.

You are thinking of Lowrance units. They take MMC/SD cards. And you can use either/or in it. If you have a USB card reader, not the older parallel port reader.
As far as I know the Garmins use only thier own.
Unless someone can tell me otherwise.

I have the 182M and its a vary good unit. You have to buy the Garmin Data Cards for the Garmin units. The mmc cards dont work. What you need too find out is what software version you got in order to save you waypiont, track, routs etc to the data card. The update version is 4.4. As far as Blue chart software. You can either buy the data card or the CD ROM . I went with the CD ROM. The reason being you have two have a data card for each region you go too. Lets See here live on Lakr Erie fish Lake Michigan for Solmon in the fall then some where in the sommer friends and i go to Saginaw Bay to fish for the weekend. Plus the good thing about the CD ROm is that I have the Blue Chart on my labtop at home. The data card wont do this for you. If you go with the CD you need to up this to it make downloading and uploading much easyier. The blank Data card I but was 16MB. I have three regions on this card and still have room to go.This winter I but the internal Antena this way I can take it off the console and put it on the bow.
MATHMAN: there is no card with the garmin units and the card is proprietary. you must buy a garmin card. they are available from many sources and the price can vari a considerable amount. the unit itself has memory but, only for storing waypoints routes and tracks. you cannot download maps to it, only to a card
