Looking for advice on a good leader for lead core and also what knots are the best to connect them. Thanks.

Go to thenextbite.com, it's a very good three part article in the use of lead line.

The two most popular leader options appear to be either 10# mono or Fireline. The Fireline makes it a complete no stretch setup. For knots the cleanest one I've found, is one I picked up here on WC, from Juls (if I remember correctly).
It involves removing about 3 inches of the lead from inside the sheath. This can be done by sliding the covering back and clipping the lead off, then stretching the covering back to it original length. Then you tie a loose overhand knot in the leadcore above the part that was removed, you then slip your leader material inside the hollowed out casing up to where the lead was cut off. Then work the overhand knot down to about 1/2" from the end of the leadcore casing and tighten the knot. The knot appears very strong and is hardly noticable. Hope this helps.
