I am new at the walleye game in the river systems of Saskatchewan Canada. I fish mainly Codette Lake (which is the Saskatchewan river part that flows into the Tobin Lake river system.
I have caught a 7.9 lb Walleye at Codette, and my little boy lost what appeared to be a 14/15 pounder (netting stupidity by mom and dad) last summer (grassy island area for those of you that fish Tobin).
My question is this: where do we start in the spring....then summer....then fall.... I think I have the summer part figured out on Codette and Tobin.
Codette is very tough in the spring as the water is very dirty and quite fast. Just winds and straight stretches, but no dams, creeks, etc. flowing into it. ...Tobin on the other hand has the dam so it is much cleaner in the spring...
What would you suggest for early spring success (we still hvae 3 feet of ice, but fishing opens May 8) especially on Codette Lake? What should I be looking for...water depths here vary....summer we fish in 15-20, but there are shallow stretches here...8 feet or so, but also some 60 foot holes as well.
Any other seasonal help on these two bodies would be appreciated?
Thanks for helping out a rookie!

Sask Lund,
I fished tobin a few years ago in october after the first major frost. My personal best is 12-12.
Lost a bigger one when it snapped the hook that I was using, have not used that name brand since!! We fish above the lake in the river. Have had good luck with leeches. If you want to e-mail me I will go into muck more detail and locations. It might take a few days for me to get back but with 3 feet of ice you have nothing but time on your hands except maybe gloves;) buzzbait@unique-software.com chat with you later.

I used to fish that water quite a bit 6 years ago. Did a few tournaments at Coddette, the river at Nipawin and also on Tobin Lake as well as lots of pleasure fishing. I found that the fishing the river consistantly produced fish the best except for the spring. You have to wait until the water clears up in the river in the spring before fishing gets any good. That takes generally to mid June.
If you are going to fish the lake in the spring although I haven't I would hit the sand bar that is located to the west of the marina at the Tobin Lake Resort. It's located about 1/4 to 1/3 miles to the west soon as you clear the break water. During July and August the walleye were located on humps topping out to 8 feet in 15 to 20 feet of water. Just have to find the humps.

Thanks Mr.! I almost hit that sandbar the first time I was there..I know which one you mean....that sounds like a good idea. Where did you fish at Codette and what did you try...anything for size? Some 12 and 13's have come out of there the last two years on the West drift.
Thanks again!

At Codette we basicly use the same as we do in the river at Nipawin, Lindy rig with leeches. I would think Lindy rigging with leeches takes
75% of the fish. My daughter caught a 10lb walleye when she was four at Codette, all I did to help was put one finger under the rod to help her and also net the fish. If I remember she would only have been using a leech on a jig. Spinners have had success also. Troll
ever so slowly just slightly faster then the current.
Our best success rate at Codette was south of the highway bridge, go south of the bridge hit the first right turn, continue straight then turn left at the next curve in the river. Start there.

Wow, what a beauty of a fish your daughter caught! Good for her! Do you still fish this river? We have two excellent tournaments there. Actually the bridge runs North and south and to the left is what they call the west drift when you go past the islan, around the next corner....most fishing takes place on that little stretch??? Lake is so new not many try new spots!
I always thought that the bridge was East and West as well but guess not!
Did you find any spinners that worked better? Length/Color/Beads....especially when dirty?
Thanks!
