I like the Raymarine 53 but the 45 is fine. For the most part they are all ok. Uniden, ICOM, Cobra they all work about the same........

I agree that for the most part they are all ok. Look at the features that you want and let that decide. I like being able to scan certain channels. I also hear (do not know enough about it YET) that some of the newer ones that are digital allow you to have conversations with others and only they can hear you much like a cell phone. I hope others that know more about this technology will chime in.
If high end features do not interest you, go by pricing and invest the money that you save into a high end antenna. The antenna makes more of a difference in performance than the radio itself. Many people on this board go with a shakespeare and I think the galaxy model is a popular choice.

I would agree with everything said so far. Most are very good it is just the difference in features. I use a Raymarine and have had very good luck with it. I am not sure if they all come with the weather band feature but I would strongly suggest getting one that has that....it has come in handy more than once.
One thing I haven't seen mentioned is the antena. There are significant differences between them in lengths and the way they are wrapped. I have the 8 foot Shakespeare 5225 FLT. I fish a lot of bigger lakes, the Mississippe and the great lakes once in a while. For range....I can easily talk to someone from the SW end of Mille Lacs to the NE corner. For the run down on exactly what to expect from each of Shakespears antenas you might want to contact them directly. The radio is only going to work as good as the antena allows it to.
Good luck on the water.

Make sure you don't purchase a radio with the round CB style holder on the back. My friend and I purchased our Lunds at the same time with the exact same Uniden's. The microphones were plastic with a plastic mic hanger on the back. Guess what--they both broke due to the pounding on Lake Erie. I'll be looking for a new radio that has a mike holder that cups the mic instead of hanging the mic.

I just bought the Standard Horizon Intrepid as well. Through the weekend there is an additional $10.00 off coupon from West Marine, which makes the price after the factory rebate to be $129.00. Incredible, since last year it sold for $249.00!! Has been discontinued to make room for models with even more features, but is a great radio.
