Hello all,

I am forcing myself to learn how to fish walleyes on the Mississippi/St Croix river this summer. Although I consider myself an OK walleye fishman on natural lakes, I am having trouble catching fish on river systems. Its definately a different beast. Can anyone out there please give me advice on how to persue these buggers on river systems? Presentations, what to look for in structure, and boat control would be a starting point.

There are websites out there that focus on that topic. Try "googleing" "mississippi river walleye" You will find TONS of info.

Good Luck.

Now until August/Sept you can easily catch a ton of walleyes by simply trolling shorelines on Pool 2 from the MN River confluence to the Ford dam using #5 or #7 Firetiger shad raps in 5-8' of water at 2-4 mph.

We caught 14 from 17-19" in 3 hours (along w/ 14-17 white bass, 2 smallies, 1 3-5lb cat, 1 sheepie) on Wed before things slowed. The bite should just get better through the end of June then slow down a bit.

Vary speed and depth, always maintaining contact w/ bottom until you get them dialed in.

St Croix and Redwing waters run a little deeper and arent as easy to predict. The pattern above WILL produce eyes on Pool 2.

The best thing you can do is put some time on the water and trust your electronics. Fish locations change throughout the year. There are websites dedicated to those bodies of water. That is where you should start for sure to find out current bite and technique. I've been hitting the Croix hard for 10 years and even though I feel pretty confident going out I still learn a ton every year. I've been hitting pool 3 lots in the past 2 years to learn it. While I have found a few locations/techniques I still have a lot to learn about that body of water. Same with pool 2.

I am booked for pool 4 on Sunday, June 6th, but have a open (freebe)seat for pool 2 on Saturday, June 5th if you are interested. I love to touch bases with pool 2 at least a day or two each month. Probably not a full day, but at least half day.
Let me know asap if you are interested.
