It takes a high end color finder with a narrow beam to show fish laying belly to the bottom. That's where they go. They sure can't all swim out the drain hole. LOL

But what about other fish than Walleye? Not that many fish bottom related. Sometime the screen is nearly blank.I run into the same thing in diving,..sometimes you see a lot of fish other times its like a moonscape. You non divers may see that with an aqua-vu.

Food swims fast trying to not be food. Fish follow food!

Well as they say something like 90% of the fish is in 10% of the water. Last year I was slowly drifting on big Winni (thats WINNIPESAUKEE!) and I had two top of the line sonars and an Aqua-vu.. trolled two poles with spinners and crawlers ,.one high andf one low. drifted for hours and hours,...nothing on the screen,.I even set the fish alarm on the fish Id on the one that had it,..thought something was wrong with the sonars. But I set back and just stared at the Aqua -vu and I don't think I spooked out a minnow all the time,..I went very deep, shallow and lots of inbetween,...nothing,..It was like everything in the lake was gone,..Now it was during the hottest part of summer so I knew it was going to be pretty tough fishing and I know there is a lot of fish in this body of water but it was curious to me I couldn't find ANY. Maybe they migrate to cool springs or places with a lot of 02 but I wasn't able to find where those were or anyone that could or were willing to tell me.

If they go shallow and are spooky it would seem to me it would be really hard to mark them. Or if they go sit in rocks. Plus, I am always impressed at how far fish migrate.

They went to Disney World. At least that's what they told me.

Everyone once in a while the Aliens come down and take them out for cleaining and maintenance and returns them back in a few days. That's my theory.

It has been my experience that if you are marking fish & catching fish and then they seem to disappear, they have done one of three things...1: they have gone to the bottom...2: they have moved (typically no more than a mile or two) or 3: they have come up into the top 5' of water where you will not normally mark them on a graph. I have been told by some of the best walleye fishermen in the business to NEVER rule out the top 5' of water.

I have a Humminbird 565, dual beam, which has pretty good resolution- 640x320
It happened to me to that on a rocky bottom I could not see any fish, but I stopped there and started catching zander jigging between rocks
so if there is a rocky bottom there's a pretty good chance that the fish is there
in the bottom is not rocky and you cannot see them, I thing they moved
the may have go to the shallow to eat or moved to other places that better suits their needs
for example in some places they like the current below the dam, therefore you will find them in places where the current has certain speed..... below the dam the fishing usually depends on the people who operates the dam :)
