What is the proper knot to connect power pro to mono?

Thanks.

I always use back to back uni knots. I've never had one fail.....yet.

I am with the eyedoktr back to back unis but I also add a spider hitch to the power pro which doubles that part of the line. Lots of times I straighten to hook but if it breaks it is usually at the improved clinch at the hook.

I don't know either. You mean you're supposed to read those little things of paper that are packed with everything you buy? I just thought they were box filler. :-)

back to back unis also. Just make sure you test it VERY well, I have had these knots slip if they aren't cinched down all the way. Seems like a no brainer, but easy to overlook.

Back to back unis here also.

Blood knots were what I used to use, but they will slip out on you.

The unis are also better if you are attaching significantly differing diameters.

Good luck,

Rick,

Same here on the back-to-back uni knots. I like to double Fireline if it's 10lb or less so it's less likely to cut the mono/floro leader (usually a spinning set-up). The 8 or 10 lb diameter Powerpro will be ok with a reg uni. Like Pete, I've never had this knot fail trolling up some pretty big eyes.

Just spent last night putting 80# Power Pro on my muskie trolling rigs. I used 20# braided dacron for the backing and used the Uni to Uni knot described in the pamphlet that came with the line. Make sure you use the xtra few wraps on the Power Pro side as instructed. Because I rarely read instructions,I just had to try a blood knot first. It slipped even before I got it snugged. PP sure is slippery.

Power Pro in the 50# to 130# class is used as backing here in the Texas Gulf coast for many applications. (used to land 4' to 10' sharks from boats and the beach plus big tuna, etc. in the bluewater) Many guys fish with a 50-100 yard mono topshot for abrasion resistance on the sand bars when surf fishing and most guys use the Improved Albright knot or the uni to uni knot. At least double or triple the number of wraps on the braided side to prevent slipping. A dab of Gorilla Glue or something similar can be used as extra insurance but isn't necessary. You can do a google search to find out how to tie the Improved Albright. It is pretty easy once you practice.

Look here for a diagram of the double uni these folks are describing... it is the right knot

If lines are similar diameter uni-to-uni is a good way to go. If they are not a similar diameter the albright is the way to go. It's the truth btw. I tried uni-to-uni with two different sized lines and it pulled apart because the one side was too small. The albright is a nice tight knot for passing through the guides and as mentioned above, surf casters use it not buried in the winds of the reel but on the main line. It looks harder to tie but it isn't.

First link is the improved albright example.

This second link has step by step directions on how to tie several different types of knots. Lots of good information and the pages print out "ok" so you can practice at home.

And if anyone is interested, here is a link to my fishing homepage with lots of pictures of the stuff I have been catching off the beach here in Texas. I don't know what I am going to do when I get back home to PA. I fear the saltwater has "ruined" me. :-)
Go to "My Photos" in the link to see my pictures.

I think maybe you're not tieing your uni-to-uni knots correctly if they are pulling apart. A uni knot is self-tightening against it's own wraps. If it's tied correctly, it can only get tighter. I've used it with every size line I run and it is the only knot I trust to join lines together. I just can't bring myself to tie leadcore together with mono by using a knot or 2 on the end of the dacron sheath of the leadcore. I want both pieces knotted to assure that it holds. I believe everyone when they say it works but I feel better using Uni-to-Uni knots on each tag end. I've been the exception to the rule and the small percentage too many times. I'd rather not be that one in a thousand chance of failure if I can prevent it. LOL.

Tighten the tag ends completely before you pull the two knots together. you will get almost 100% that way.
