What's more important when vertical jigging?

I think boat control and staying vertical are one in the same, and both were assumed, and I agree 100%. I was mainly after your ideas on the factors listed. I didn't imply that the way a minnow was rigged was more important.

I say staying verticle and paying attention to detail. Following your line down watching for hits on slack line and changing the speed of your jigs until you find what works best that day.

To keep it on the hook longer. What good is it, if it comes off the hook whether it lively or not lol.

To do both - hook the minnow under the chin - out the top and then place a 1/8 - 1/4 inch thick chunk of a rubber worm, salamander head or a twister tail over the hook point and past the barb - we call it a bumper. Works slick - covers both camps! Chuckles

I try to "lip hook" on tough days when your tightlining, or even the upside down routine, but most days an aggressive stroke with subtle wiggles, which calls for a solidly hooked minnow, gets the nod.

If I am incharge of boat control, strapping it or most of it on there. If the fish are clearly hitting a lively lip or precise hooked bait I MIGHT risk losing boat control.

Clear water presentations need lively minnows but dirty river water fishing I hook to stay on.
I agree with other posters staying vertical is the key to catching fish.
