I fish Lake Erie and just purchased gear for trolling from Cabelas. I will be using Michigan Scorpion spoons and Pa's Fintail spoons. I use dipsey divers and a 6' leader. What is the best way to connect the line to the spoon to make sure it has the best action. Your help is appreciated.
1. Tie line directly to spoon at attach a swivel to the dipesy.
2. Use swivel to connect to spoon.
3. Use Norman speed clip.

I use either a norman speed clip or cross lock snap (no swivel) on the leader end that attaches to the spoon. On the end to the diver I use a good quality ball bearing snap swivel.

I'd agree but add if you use a thin light pound test and flexable leader material and are just starting, you'd be well advised to put a ball bearing snap swivel at both ends of the leader to reduce the possibility of a kinked up leader.
One of the main reasons for 20 or 25 # pure flourocarbon leader material is the stiffness vertually eliminates the possibilty of the leader twisting up.
Good luck...spoons can produce a lot of fish.

I learned from Chip Porter that he uses 12# line for the leader to give the spoon better action. I do a lot of trolling, both for salmon and waleye, and I haven't had a problem with twisted leaders. I tie a snap swivel to the line and use a split ring at the spoon. Leader length depends on the rod length.

Is there an advantage to using a snap instead of a snap swivel on the spoon end when you run a large dia leader between the spoon & dipsy.?
Is there any down side to running snubbers? We usually only add them if there is a chance for bullets.
Thanks,

GU,
The 20 or 25 pound flourocarbon is really stiff line, and I had serious concerns about limiting spoon action, but there seems to be no ill effect. We do use a smal (+/- 5/8ths inch) round bottom cross lock snap only at the spoon. And we run snubbers all the time with Dipsys, because we use superlines and have a tendency to be one of the faster trollers.
Hope this helps...good luck.
