I'm a new wannabe walleye fisherman. I'm curious if there is a significant difference is lure depths if the lure is trolled longline say 100 ft behind a rod in rodholder and the same lure trolled 100 ft behind a downrigger cannonball.

If the boat floats......you need more tackle
You need a copy of Precision Trolling by Mark Romanack available here at the products page.
Oh yea...there is definately a diference.

I have the 7th version of the trolling bible. It doesn't address this situation.

My bad.. here's some info out of the 4th edition ...
"Downrigger trolling with crankbaits is another excellent deep water presentation. For this application we return to the dive curves. When downrigging crankbaits, you will predict the running depth below the ball from the dive curve. For example let's say we know from the dive curve that our crankbait will dive 12 feet down on a 50' lead. Letting 50' of line out, we now attach it to the downrigger release and let the cannonball down. To determine the running depth of the crankbait, we simply add the 12' to the depth of the cannonball and that's where the crankbait will go! If we place the ball at 20', we know the bait will run at 32' (12 + 20)."
Hope this helps, and good luck.
