Which crankbaits do guys like the best that dive to that 16-18 foot range?

reef runner rip shads, cotton cordell walle divers, thunderstick jrs and #8-#9 rapala deep divers.

Reef Runner Deep Little Ripper, just tune them precisely. They're fish catching machines.

Rapala Diving Husky Jerks should be included in that group.

I agree with ETT. The deep little ripper is my go to crankbait. It's worth the extra time it takes to fine tune them.

I used to hate Deep Little rippers and only use them when all else fails. I slowed down a little (2.4mph or less) and learned how to tune them and now I am convinced that there is no better crank...well maybe a #7 shad rap. Anyway, the DLR will give you an unbeatable range of depth with a fairly small lure. I have caught more fish on them than any other crank the last two seasons.

Lately, I have been using 10/4 Fireline on a couple of my board rods and I have found that I can get a #7 Rap to go 16' deep when 200' back and trolling at low speeds (1.6mph), that has been productive on my local lake recently.

When you go DLR shopping, buy the Eriedescent and Silver Eriedescent for clear water and the Red hot tigers for stained to muddy water.

ETT:

Both yourself and Hogslammer made the point of having to "precisely tune the Reef Runner Deep Little Ripper". Could you elaborate please?

A lure (any lure) that is not properly tuned will not reach it's proper depth. They need to track straight through the water when being trolled. If they pull off to either side constantly instead of running back to right behind your rodtips when dragged along side of the boat, they need to be tuned. If it pulls out to the the right, you SLIGHTLY bend the wire connector on the bill back to the left. It is best to use a needle nose pliers and slowly adjust back to the correct setting. You don't want to weaken the attachment wire by too much adjusting back and forth. You will know you have it tuned properly when you can pull it forward rather quickly and it snaps out to both sides equally but returns to run straight behind your rod again immediately. All lures have a limit to how fast they can be trolled. Some just naturally can be trolled faster than others. It doesn't mean that something is wrong with a lure that doesn't troll at speeds above 3 mph. All it's telling you is that you have reached the performance limitations of that lure style. Hope this answers your question satisfactorily.

Anyone use these ? Picked up a couple on clearance. Looks like they have a very wide wobble, like a lazy ike...

Here's a thread that goes into some detail. Submit a follow-up if it doesn't completly answer your questions.

ETT:

Thanks for digging up the reference. After reviewing all the posts therein, I'm better prepared to at least have my lures running right.
