Paul, the det.river is being fished now by a good number of boats.Best action is taking place in the Trenton channel at the lower end and in the stugeon hole at the head of the river.Fish are being taken by jiggers& handliners. As for fishing this river from a 14ft boat I wouldnt advise it.

You can call Lakeside Fishing Shop's recorded fishing report (updated almost every day)

A 14 footer? I wouldn't.

Paul:
With a little common sense, you should have no problem fishing a 14 footer on the Detroit River. I have both a 1775 Pro-V and a 14 footer, and find myself taking the small boat out as often as the big boat. Don't forget the common sense, though. There are times and places, such as at the mouth with a SE wind howling in off Erie, where you shouldn't be out there in a small boat.
Typically, I don't get serious until the first of April. Not only does it take a while for the bite to pick up, but you traditionally have to worry about ice floes coming down the river. Stay tuned here for reports, though, it could get going earlier this year.
Thanks for the advise homer, you sound like you have the wisdom of a greek god. let me know when the river turns on up there. I'll have to battle the mud in the illinois for now!!!!!!

Paul,
I second what Homer says regarding the wind patterns off Erie. If it blows from S almost any sized boat will have control problems. And I agree that the 14 footer is no problem in "normal" conditions since the launch (Erie Metro) is right at good fish water and, you won't need to travel longer than a few miles at most to get to the biters. You'll see lots of handliners in the smaller craft also. Good luck and be sure to wear your PFD. Jim S.

Paul, the others are quite right. When launching downriver, a stiff south wind will make things tough. Now that said, there are many other launches in the mid and upper river stretches where the wind is almost a non-factor. At Wyandotte, you could launch a canoe if you wanted (wouldn't advise it though) and be fishing within 50 yards of the ramp.
I cut my river fishing teeth in a 14 footer with a transom mounted electric. Looking back, it seems to me that I caught just as many then as I do now with fancy electronics, fast boat, better tackle......

Tom, I'm sure i'll catch more than the big rigs !!! I always do down here!! Man you should see those M.W.C. guys jaw's drop when i throw back 4-5 lb saugers during the tournament( and of course I hold em down out of sight)!!

Are you sure they are saugers? I don't ever remember catching a sauger in the Detroit River in the 50 years I have fished it. Maybe they are 14 or 15 pounders too eh? Why don't you get in the tournament?
I think your on a different river. The MWC has never been to the Detroit River.
The Illinois river !!!! lots of mud!!!
