what is the best or smallest pound fire line you would crank deep divers with, could you use 4 lb and put a small tipet of it to stop nicks, looking to get deep with the smallest amount of line out in current ,any TIPS appreciated from the trollers thanks

In your situation, go ahead and use the smallest lb. test you think you can get away with. Tie on a small round nosed snap without any tippet type line. The Fireline will be small enough already and will be strong enough for your wants or needs. The small diameter will get you deep as quick as possible. If you tie on a tippet or leader you'll have another knot that will cause drag and defeat your intent to maximize depth. That line will also be larger in diameter to match the strength of the Fireline which you have already sized to your smallest limits of use.

PT book says you get the same depth with either 10/4 or 6/2 lb fireline (4 & 2 lb dia).

I currently use 10/2 power pro in some open water situations with rr's or small diving planers w & w/o in-line boards - works fine. Sometimes you don't want a shorter leads & don't need more depth though.

10/4 fireline is way more abrasion resistent than 10/2 power pro where zebra mussels are involved.

Hope this helps,

cb,

As ST and GU said the 10/4 FIRELINE SHOULD BE ADEQUATE FOR MOST WALLEYE APPS. yOU CAN GET SOME PRETTY IMPRESSIVE DEPTHS WITH DEEP DIVERS AS COMPARED TO (sorry about caps) 10 lb mono. Many use the 10 lb mono or eq braid to match the dive curves in the Precision Trolling book. I do remember that PT said that 2 and 4 dia Fireline had the same curve but that really doesn't make sense to me. I never trolled 2/6 so I can't say for sure.

i use both 10 and 6 fireline most of the time. they do not run the same depth.

The smallest I have gone with is 10/4 fireline and don't think I would consider going any smaller. I do have other line counters rigged with up to 30/8 power pro to so depends where I am fishing and what depths I wish to attain and how much line I want out behind the boat.

has anyone had problems with 10-4 fireline fraying when pulling cranks in shallow rocky areas---i have had to go with a 3ft length of seaguard carbon pro to solve this dilema
