Do they really work that much better than the wire traps?

I have used both side by side and filled the glass trap everytime and only rarely fill the wire trap. You need to be careful with them though cuz they will break, and at or about 50 bucks a pop that
hurts. Another thing I have found is that they work best if you point the perforated end directly into the wave direction so the bait can swim "upstream" into the trap.

The "Orvis" style glass traps are, hands down, the best minnow traps I've ever used. Used to trot line fish alot and nothing else came close for catching chubs. A neat trick I used was to place the round legs in baby food jar lids, then fill the lids level with molten lead. Puts a little weight on the trap but sure keeps it in place in current without having to worry about anchor lines coming loose.
I won't use anything else. I got mine from my grandfather, which he used until he passed away. I think he must have got it back in the 30's or 40's. It was used many, many times side by side with wire traps and the glass one always had double, maybe triple the minnows of the wire one's. I didn't realize they were $50 to replace, I think I'll be a little more careful when I use it, yikes.

When i was at gander mountain in erie pa. yesterday i noticed frabil? clear plastic ones in a close out bin. I looked at them real quick and don't remember the price but i'd quess somewhere around $20. Seems like it would work just as good as the glass ones. Don't know if they would hold up better than glass or not but they seemed to be fairly heavy plastic They were solid plastic with just the funnel opening and some holes for water flow thru at the other end

A "good enough" clear, see through trap can be made by cutting off the bottoms of 2, 2 liter pop bottles and stuff one end into the other or tape them together. It helps to cut the top openings a bit larger. Put some pebbles inside with bait when using them in a current. Cheap and they work.

i agree with bumps 2 he and i have
fished together for years
you cannot beat a glass trap. however
traps stamped "orvis" i think go on
e-bay for big bucks. plastic traps will work
but discolor easy. glass traps need to be cleaned
and the nose pointed upstream.
bait them with "salted" crackers crumbled up
just below fast water with weeds. if a perch
or small game fish gets in pull it up. no minnows
will go in.
