The same boat has been whispering to me as I pass it, "I'd do you well on the river or as a duck boat." The price is certainly right, and they meet all the Coast Guard requirements. A jon is okay for small to medium rivers and small lakes. As for "better", the boat with the full livewell is the boat with the status. All the shiney stuff and the full-page ads in the magazines do nothing to put fish in the freezer, but do add to maintenance chores. As an example, look at the beater jon boat Dan Gapen usually uses.

I use a 14' jonboat for duck hunting, lakes w/ carry in access only and on shallow rivers. Fantastic boat for smaller water or calm days. W/ a 10-15 hp motor they really go and they draw so little water that if you have to row or use an electric they are still nice. Go for it. If you're like me you'll never get rid of it.

That jon will be great for you - after all - it sounds like it is your first boat. A first boat is like your first girl(boy)friend and (in the future) your first car - a person NEVER FORGETS them no matter what they end up with in life!
