misi fishing above the twin cities

I heard some interesting stories about fishing on the Mississippi River north of the twin cities. Anyone tried it, How late in the season do the launches remain usable and are their any bait stores to get info from.I don't want to drive more than an hour North of 694. Thanks for any info.
