Paradise in Peril.....Lake Michigan in Trouble

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has just started a three part series on the condition of Lake Michigan. It's excellent reading! It explains theories and gives history on how we got to where we are today.

After making contact with a few Trout and Salmon fishermen regarding the walleye stocking program, I'm totally convinced that this is a political nightmare. Money talks and the salmon fishing industry is 4.5 BILLION dollar industry trying to sustain a superficial fishery. Now they talk about stocking alewife, the very predator that they tried to eradicate by the original stocking program.

Like I said, interesting reading and something that I think all walleye fishermen should keep an eye on. I don't want to appear as being anti-trout and salmon! BUT, I do fear their political clout, and would like to believe that we will make decisions based on science and what's best for the ecological system.... not what is best for the charter business industry.

What a great article. The guy writing it seems to be hitting both sides of the story very accurately. Please post the follow-up articles when the paper puts them out. It will be good reading for everyone whenever stocking is brought up for about any lake system. Thank you for posting it.

Excellent article! I grew up in Racine and remember the horrible smell from the lake when an East wind blew.

Looking forward to reading the rest of the series and the resulting letters to the editor.

Very interesting article and makes one wonder if it's worth it to keep the large population of non-native salmon/trout as it sound like now we have to raise alwives to feed them-it's like an aquarium-not self sustaining like nature intended. I guess time will tell.
