what would be some good spinning and live bait type outfits to get to add to my equipment for fishing tournaments with a co-angler? i have lots of line counter trolling setups but need more good spinning and other setups to fish a variety of presentations in tourneys, any recommendations appreciated. thanks.

for spinning, get what ever rods you prefer..length/action. for bouncers and other livebait rigging, again rod length/action you prefer and use baitcasting reels with the flippin switch option. like everything else, it comes down to your preferences.

I have had pretty good luck providing guests/co-anglers with Berkley Lightning rods (appropriate to the task... med or med hvy) and Shimano Sidestabs, about $65.00 total, each setup. I tend to give more medium rods...since I usually have them spooled with fireline for jigging or crankbaits... The medium action is just a bit more forgiving on those "bassmasters hooksets"... And, I find the Berkley Lightning rods to be pretty sensitive and fairly well made. The reels ride out two seasons and are disposed of in a garage sale, etc.

I prefer baitcaster with flppin switch. But.. a few years ago when I fished as an am my pro had his ams using trolling setup with line counters for bottum bouncing. That way you could duplicate the depth of your dead rod with the one you're holding. worked pretty well he took 2nd place.

What if your sponsor makes junk? Try the Rapala $20 rods.

Mike,

Disregard my first comments. I had read the post from hgmeyerunlogged and was thinking about his post when I posted and did not read my post until I had posted it. Cant find a way to edit my post.

I really enjoy using Fenwick products for rods. The Techna AV is actually a joy to use. Light and very sensative. Many good abu reels to choose from but none with a flipping switch for bouncing.

On spinning reels I have 6 of the Cardinal 672's and love them. I also have some of the Mitchell Advocets. These are some pretty good reels for the price.

Whatever you decide on for brand, get the same style you will be using. That way duplicating a winning presentation will be easier, or should I say possible. I have listened to several pro's at seminars state very strongly, eliminate the chance of having a "Lucky Rod" by having 4 or 5 of each in the boat.

That way if you are going to describe what the bite felt like on your setup, you can feel confident the feel will be the same on your AM's setup. The unspoken examples you display of hook set, surge and pause, which will be duplicated by your AM, will not be different because of the equipment in his/her hand.

Listen to what Burr says, have the same set up ready for your partner as you plan to use. Have back ups too, Face it, stuff happens, your fault, AM's fault, no one's fault. If you can afford to, have another option or two for your AM. Giving him a slightly longer rod with a quicker action might be just what the AM is comfortable with and this may add another fish in your boat. The one thing you don't want to do is give your AM junk to fish with.

i agree in having the same good quality equip all around, i mentioned the co-angler part to give as full a picture as possible. i'm glad i did because some of the answers brought out things i hadnt thought of, like keeping all the setups the same where possible. i didnt mean to give the impression if i did, that i would use better equip then the co-angler, nothing could be further from the truth. i like to use the best equip avail whenever possible and what just looking for suggestions, thanks for the responses, it was helpful as usual.
