Looking at buying a new fishfinder and am having a problem picking which one to buy because of a few questions.
But first some background: have a 128 hummingbird on a 14' aluminum that works great but likes to target floating stumps or branches as fish. We mostly troll or throw cranks in 30ft or less but sometimes will deep jig for macks in 100ft+. Speed is crucial since we troll from under 1 to 4mph and temp is also needed and we want to spend less than $350.

Choices:
Hummingbird 400 or better: easy to use since we have one and the tri beam transducer seems like a benefit to a troller.

Eagle optima: 240 pixs is nice but know nothing about them.

Lowrance X65 and 2400: 2400 looks nice but was is the difference betwen them besides pixel count?

thanks in advance

All choices are bad. Look at Bottom line. I always felt this was the best, however I bought a boat this past weekend with an Apelco 460, it looks GREAT. Spend a few extra dollars and stay away from H'bird.

For the price range you mention, I've been impressed with Eagle/Lowrance. You can get a really good price on an Ultima Classic with speed/temp, though it is an old design. I'd put Hummingird as a last choice, mostly due to their inability to turn off fish ID feature. My current favorite is Bottomline but I have to admit they're pretty spendy. But I've never seen better resolution than my Tournament Champion(baitfish on the bottom in 200+ feet).

Hello from the Netherlands (just visiting)

Take a look at the Furuno LS6000. (www.furuno.com). $389 via Shoreway Marine catalog (www.shorewaymarine.com). Includes speed & temp. 300W rms (2400 peak) 320x240 pixels, big screen. Just pickedone up myself...looks like a great unit so far..I'll know more in a few weeks.

I've got a friend, Bill, up in Wisconcin that likes the Humminbird units, runs nothing else. He uses the side looking transducer with his unit. I have a 400TX that I use Bass Fishing down here in the South. You can turn off the fish symbols.
Hope this helps, I was just nosing around. Bill told me I could see what walleye fishing was about by going here. Don't sound much different than bass fishing - still trying to get a smarter animal to bite a hook!

Lowrance/Eagle are excellent units, I have two and wouldn't trade them for anything, excellent service too if you ever need it. Bottomline seems to be pretty good too, though my buddy is thinking about getting rid of his and going back to Lowrance. The Pinpoint units also look awful good. Hummingbird would be my last choice.

I put a LCG 2400 from cabelas on my boat early this year (15 ft herters with a 25 horse johnson). So far I love it, ive mainly been on the river with it but if i see a fish, i can usualy catch a fish.
The 2400 is the same as the x-75 except it dosent have the cold cathode lighting. If you do a lot of nightfishing you might want to find the X-75 on sale with the speed and temp sensor (ive seen it for 359). So far i have been impressed with the 2400 and wouldnt trade it for anything less than a 2000 chevy 3500 =). I hope you end up with a unit to fit your needs, andy more information you need on he 2400 just ask I'll be happy to answer any questions.

I would highly recommend an Eagle/Lowrance unit. As with anything, you get what you pay for. If I were you, put a few more bucks into it and get a Lowrance LMS 350A. Sure it costs more, but well worth the investment.
As for your old locator picking up floating stumps and debris....I'm not trying to be a smart A.. here,.... But there is not a single locator out there that can tell the difference between a fish and something floating in the water column.
Good luck
