I'm prompted to share some canine information because some of the recent posts tell me that the people on WC really, really, really care about their dogs.

If you have a dog who has some pain on walking, running, hunting that is caused by joint problems, you may be able to help it by doing what I did. I'm a runner who had to curtail running because of too much knee pain. Then, a worker friend of mine gave me an article on horses. They gave the horses Glucosamine complex at ~10mg/# body weight and the horses showed big time improvement.

Base on that, I started to take glucosamine complex (IMPORTANT NO CHONDROITIN, which is more expensive any way). I bought Schiff brand 1000mg tablets at Walmart and took 2 a day since I weigh ~155#. Within 1 week, my knee pain was gone! If it's going to help you, you'll know quickly.

Well, my yeller lab,Yukon Gold, had sustained a car injury as a young dog & would sometimes exhibit severe limping after strenuous hunting. I gave this dog 500mg in the AM & also the PM with his meals. He runs like a puppy now!! In >2 years, there's been no limping!!

Comsumer reports did a story on glucosamine benefits a few months ago. Check it out.

If you or your pooch have joint problems that are cartilege related, you may benefit from glucosamine complex. It'll only cost you $10 - 15 to find out within 1 - 2 weeks if it will help you. I'm not aware of any known negative side effects of glucosamine complex. Read about it & decide if you want to try it?

No - I don't own stock in any of this. I want to share with you an inexpensive remedy. My vet said I should use prescription glucosamine (at 5 - 10X) cost because it gives a guaranteed dosage. I said no-no because the much less expensive stuff is giving Yukon & me great results.

It's not snake oil or "alternative medecine." It's a cartilege precursor.

Atonic Eye, Great post....Really.

I had similar thoughts reading those posts. It's true what you write, that stuff really works.

My 10 yr old dog was limping around, not interested in chasing anything...just getting old. Starter her out on that stuff and 6 months later she moving like a 5 year old!! Her hips were so tight at one point, she could only put weight on one foot.

Sorry...both posts sound like an info-mercial and I rarely comment on non-fishing stuff, but this stuff works.

BadFinger,
Thanks. I expect to hear that a number of our "baby boomer" fisher persons have had the same benefits. I checked with the MDs at the National Lab that I'm a scientist at before I tried the stuff.

I was prompted to try this post because some guys recently wrote about how much pain they had in putting down their longtime companions and buds. So, I thought, "Why not share what has improved the quality of my dog's life with me?" What is fishing about - quality of life? What is sharing time with our canine buddies about -quality of life? Mostly, I feel he adds more quality to mine than I to his.

I'd like to find out if any of you have had experience like this with your hunting dogs? Thanks.
