View Full Version : Looking for a Minnesota Lake
I plan on taking a trip into Minnesota this year with my wife and another couple. We want to find a place with some decent fishing, a nice beach, and affordable lodging. We are thinking mid July. Any help with this would be appreciated.

Lake Vermillion could be an option. Tremendous beauty and lots of resorts to choose from.

I second the Vermillion-Ely area, IMO Vermillion is the nicest lake in the state considering fishing, scenery and accesability. Some nice resorts and did I mention the fishing!

Don't forget Green Lake, by Spicer in Kandiyohi county. The county where the lakes begin in Minnesota. 15 good fishing lakes(all spieces) within 10 mins of each other. But then again, I've been fishing Minnesota for 20 years and the entire state is great!

Green lake is great if you want jet skiers, wake boarders, and ski boats ruining your Mn experience. I used to fish green regularly, got pushed out by the recreational boaters and jet skis! Don't waste your time!
There is a reason it is called Green Lake.

I've taken a few trips to the Alexandria area and have enjoyed it.
The town itself has a lot going if the Missus likes antiques and shopping in general. There are some real good restaraunts in the area. And for the most important part......You have access to the Alexandria Chain which is 4 or 5 lakes, depending on how wet of a year they are having you may not have to load your boat the whole time. Lakes Reno, Minnewaska and Osakis are all within an hour's drive of Alexandria as well.

Camp Liberty Resort on Eighth Crow Wing Lake is a great place ---no jet skiis allowed. Great people, great facilities, and great fishing. We've been taking our grandkids there for the last 5 years. It's pretty popular so I'd be surprised if you can get a cabin in July but here is the info
address 20522 269th Ave, Nevis Mn 56467 phone 218-652-3533 or 1-800-472-0506. Web site is www.camplibertyresort.com

What lakes would you recomend for the southern part of Minnesota?

Dade, if I were you I would restate the original question. The lakes in MN are extremely varied and there are many options for each 'type' of lake you could list.
You mentioned a couple things including a good beach but that was about it.
Are you looking for big water? Mille Lacs, Lake of the Woods, Leech, etc.
Are you looking for smaller lakes with good fishing? There are a billion and you would get lots of suggestions.
Are you looking for more of a 'wilderness' feeling? The Ely area might fit.
I'd narrow it down a bit and ask again. Not that you won't get good suggestions here, you will just get so many different suggestions that are not easy to compare apples to apples.
Affordable ma and pa style places to stay are getting fewer and fewer every year. However, they are still around and many lakes offer affordable places.

You are in luck. Minnesota has several lakes, I am told.
