I have been using spinning gear to cast lures at night...primarily for fear of having to untangle a backlash in the dark/with minimal light. Was wondering what type of reels others use...spinning or casting ? Any suggestions for baitcasters thaqt might work better ?
Thanks !

Daiwa SS2-2000C & SS2-3000C is a great night or day spinning reel for shore casting plugs and jigs. Cast well, smooth, very smooth drag, no twist issues as long as you have your drag set properly. $150

The ABU Center Drag CD-3000 is another great choice. The center drag is very handy in the dark. Casts very smooth and 6 bearings makes it slick, good drag, very good bail spring sytstem too. $100

Shimano, Mitchell rear drags, especially with current, wind and hang ups. The ability to down "shift" your drag setting when drifting away from a snag you cannot see saves lures and rigs.

Good point. I like rear drag reels myself, they are getting harder to find. They always like to put quick triggers on everything. I like them without all the extra stuff to reduce things that can go sour.

The new Mitchel 300X looks interesting to me too. I have not had a chance to try it yet. Simple is much better for me after dark.

My favorite reel for casting cranks is the Shimano spirex, it has a trigger and is very easy to cast. One drawback is no instant anti-reverse, but that is not a big deal when you are fishing cranks. I think they run about $60.00. It also has an option of either rear drag or front drag.

Sounds like that casting at night thing might be a challenge to you. Do you turn down your TV when you smell something burning? Try the Zebco 202. Mine works better at night than during the day.

Shimano Stradic 2000 spinning reel for me...day or night. It's a "reel" smoothy!
