OK, I am convinced after reading all of the threads that the Genetron unit has the best target separation and best resolution. Now I need to know if it is superior in its ability to scan at speeds higher than my LMS350. That is, can I still run at 50 MPH and read depth? Am I still relegated to about 12 MPH in order to mark pods of bait fish and hooks? Thanks for your help!

GOOD QUESTION! THE GENETRON CAN TRACK AT SPEEDS OVER 60MPH, IF THE TRANSDUCERS ARE MOUNTED CORRECTLY AND THE BOAT HAS "GOOD' WATER UNDERNEATH IT. SEVERAL YEARS AGO I WAS WITH JOHN PHILLIPS, A PRO FISHERMAN, IN HIS RANGER BOAT. WE WERE AT SPEEDS OF 60MPH GIVE OR TAKE AND THE GENETRON WAS PERFOMING FLAWLESSLY. THE RANGER HAS A PAD WAY DOWN LOW THAT GIVES A SUPERB TRANSDUCER LOCATION! AS FAR AS THE WORD "SCANNING" I AM GOING TO ASSUME YOU MEAN SCREEN "PARADE". THE GENETRON "SCAN PARADE" IS VARIABLE AND VERY FAST IF YOU WANT IT TO BE. YOU CAN CONTROL THE PARADE MANUALLY OR SET IT TO AUTOMATIC. ALSO A INTERESTING SIDE NOTE. AS YOU START TO GO VERY FAST AND THE FISH ARE SUSPENDED THE "ARCS" TEND TO BECOME A STRAIGHT LINE UP AND DOWN. A GOOD SONAR EYE WILL LEARN TO RECOGNIZE THIS SO THAT YOU CAN SEARCH FOR FISH AT VERY HIGH SPEEDS. DICK KNUTSON GENETRON
for that exact reason, is the reason i originally bought my first genetron. it is one of the key advantages i have over other fishermen by having it available onboard.
my genetron can see fish, and mark them very prominently, TIGHT on the bottem or suspended to within eight feet of the surface( if the fish allows), easily at 35mph. (my boat only goes that fast lol)
the first time i watched one work was while on the way to a common fishing haunt and to my amazement, in a not so common spot, lying along the base of a droppoff, was a giant school of walleyes. the trottle pulled back fast! proof was on the line in moments. i was sold.
now another classic story on the same lines...veteran pro, scott hauge #22, was fishing a big event on mille lacs. on the first day, about noon, he headed for the flats to round out his limit of slots with a piggy. with his lms 350, he scoured the backer flat toward the needle end. seeing nothing, he decided to hunt elsewhere. as he was leaving, kent hutchinson from pierre s.d. was just getting there to do the same thing. scott chuckled as he "knew" hutch was wasting his time. well, at the weigh-in, hutch weighed the slots and the piggy, scott was piggyless. so scott goes to hutch and asks where he gott'em. hutch says, "geez scott, why'd you leave the backer, the place was plum loaded with with 5 to eight pounders"?! that night , an airplane landed at the brainerd airport from fargo, handing scott a genetron that we installed in a mosquito infested, middle of the night scenario. and that scenario of one guy seeing them with the video, and the other guys missing them with the other stuff, is never ending. dan plautz won at erie two years ago, catching fish the whole field ran by, tight on the bottem. not ten inches off, tight, which is about the true average limit of separation i have found through virtual testing with the other technology. the stories never end...
come aboard and watch.

previously, i described seeing fish at higher speeds with my video. to give a better idea what i'm seeing, these fish will be bigger in physical size on my screen at 35 then the fish on other screens at 5mph. now, you mention 50 mph.... i will never know that, 'cause i am fraid to go that fast. lol

glad to help mr. ??.
this subject is a great one to analyze. i admit to not knowing all or much of the technical stuff about the depthfinder world. but i know what i see on my screen in my boat. that's where it counts.
i simply will not stop the boat until i see'em on the screen. because if they ain't there on the my screen, they ain't there to catch. they can't hide because they ain't got shovels and they ain't got wings. that ain't always true with other stuff that's out there.

I once had an Interphase 20/20 that is a CRT unit. Great unit but I couldn't read it in bright sunlight. Does the Genetron have the same problem?? Is the "video" the same as a CRT??

THE GENETRON IS A MONOCHROME GREEN PHOSPHOR CRT. UNLIKE A COLOR CRT IT CAN EASILY BE SEEN IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT IN AN OPEN BOAT. DICK KNUTSON GENETRON

MIKE,SORRY I FORGOT, GENERALLY A "VIDEO" IS THE SAME TERMINOLOGY AS A CRT. DICK KNUTSON GENETRON
i don't get into pricing. ballpark will be $1800-$1900 or more.
call dick at 701-298-0900. he can clue you in on that. he might have a trade-in unit also for a better price too.

I have fished Genetrons for 6 or 7 years now. I am not a pro, just an average guy. I fish Mille Lacs hard. It sit's in the back of my tiller and through rough water, it's been pounded. The only thing that has happened to it is I accidently broke the front glass. Was it expensive to fix, ya it was alittle on the high side. I know how many he sells a year and it doesn't even come close to Lowrance. I think you might be surprised how much certain parts cost at those volumes. It's a very focused market however the marking ability is second to none, especially on tight hugging fish on the flats, as SF has described. Is it for everyone, nope. The statement about the Pro's getting a kickback, I suppose you think the guys running Lowrances and recommending them are paying full price and deriving no benefit from extolling the greatness of the new LCD's? It's like anything else, do your own research and figure out what important to you. I think the Genetron will outmark anything on the market today. That's just my opinion, and I am willing to pay for that ability. Some people aren't, and that's fine. It's like my Olds Aurora, great car, but everything is double what it is on my Chevy truck. If that's what you want.............

Hopefully this post caught you at a bad time. Dick has had my card number on a couple of occasions and has always done what he promised. I just purchased my second Genetron last month. they are solid units. I am definitely not a pro and every centfor these units has been mine. On many occasions I've been out with friends on other boats when they've gone over a spot trolling saying that there weren't any fish. I trust the Genetron and work them over for a while before moving on. When they ask me where I caught them they scratch their heads. The best thing is that I've had witnesses on the boat for the trip. Most stick with their units and I know that it's a cost consideration. That is there right to do so. But I've had too much positive practical experience with my unit to be mislead by someone who hasn't. If you don't like the unit, buy something else. The rather nasty comments about Dick personally don't seem warranted. If you think that his product is too expensive and doesn't deliver enough value for your money, that's your privilege to vote with your dollar. But, try to think through your decisions about personal attacks. We've all probably done it when caught at a bad time but, I couldn't let this one pass.

I agree with StlFishing on most of his claims, however, I do believe the Genetron to be the Cadillac of sonars. Great unit, HIGHLY questionable service practices. Search the archives for more on this subject, especially if you are considering a purchase!

Is this unit similar in technology to the Sonic Wave for a couple decades ago?

(your quote):
"The only reason these Pro's are telling you they are good, is, they
get a $ 200.00 kick-back on any they help sell."
For your information, ANYONE who owns a Genetron has the opportunity to get $200.00 back for helping sell the units, not just the pros.
Just setting it straight....

Good point Juls. I've had the same offer from Genetron and I'm definitely not a pro. I just like the unit that they manufacture and put up my own money for it.

THIS IS IN RESPONSE TO SOME VEY LIBELOUS, SLANDEROUS, AND TOTALLY FALSE REMARKS MADE BY SEVERAL COWARDS WHO REFUSE TO IDENTIFY THEMSELVES ON THEIR POSTS.
1. WE DO NOT GET ANY OF OUR PARTS FROM RADIO SHACK. PERIOD!
2. I PERSONALLY SPOKE TO WILL LAGE YESTERDAY AND HE ASSURED ME HE HAS NEVER PURCHASED ANY PARTS FROM RADIO SHACK FOR HIS GENETRON. WILL TOLD ME THAT HE ALSO WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT WHO USED HIS NAME WITHOUT HIS PERMISSION. FURTHERMORE ANYONE WHO KNOWS WILL LAGE KNOWS HE DOES NOT LIVE IN PIERRE SD.
3. ANY ACCUSATION THAT WE MISUSE OUR CUSTOMERS CREDIT CARDS IS BLATANTLY FALSE. THERE IS NO SURCHARGE ON ANY REPAIR.PERIOD
4. WE DO OFFER A $200.00 FINDERS FEE TO ALL, AND I WANT TO STRESS THE WORD ALL, OF OUR CUSTOMERS FOR A DIRECT REFERAL ON A POTENTIAL CUSTOMER THAT ENDS UP PURCHASING A GENETRON. OUR CUSTOMERS ARE OUR BEST SALESPEOPLE!
5. WE HERE AT GENETRON ARE FIRM BELIEVERS IN FREE SPEECH, HOWEVER WHEN SOME PEOPLE HIDE BEHIND FALSE NAMES AND MAKE TOTALLY FALSE STATEMENTS IS COWARDICE ,PURE AND SIMPLE. DICK KNUTSON GENETRON

I must comment on the statements made by Stlfishing. I live in Fargo and Genetron has an extremely strong reputation. Dick is not afraid to tell it like it is which I consider a strong attribute. I do not own a Genetron, however; someday I will. My brother-in-law has used one for several years and he fishes in extreme conditions and has never had any serious problems with any of the units that he has had. They are built durable. Unless you have first hand knowledge and can back it up, keep your comments to yourself. As far as a part for an electronic unit, it isn't the cost of the part that is expensive, it is the expertise in how to repair it. I am in electronics and am fully aware of mark up on components. Trust me, you are not paying for the component, you are paying for the engineering and expertise for repair. I am not sure where you got your chip on your shoulder but be careful on making statements without putting up your identity.
It is an awesome unit.

Dick, I just purchased a 2 year old boat with a G-9. The guy I got it from said his new boat is on order and he is installing another Genetron-- his 4th one! In an earlier thread, I believe a comment was made about a get-together someone sponsored to learn how to use and get acquainted with the Genetron. Any plans for another?
I'm anxious to get on the water and give this unit a try. I've been using a Lowrance X-65 for the last few years and was happy with it until I started fishing Lake Michigan for salmon. Then was not happy with the power. It sounds like the G-9 should do the job.
