A good buddy highly recommends drop shotting for Walleyes and some other species. Has anyone used this technique? Is it any better than the "weight above" the bait system as opposed to the "weight below" drop-shotting method? I can see advantages but just looping the mono thru the eye of the hook, without a leader kinda' makes me wonder. He calims that he has great luck with it...just would appreciate opinions from anyone who has tried it with good or bad results...Thanks...

A time and a place for everything escpecially drop shotting.
I like using it when the bottom has a slime or other content that keeps "sliming up" my offering.
Also works great on steep breaking contours. Johnnie Candle did a great article for WALLEYE INSIDE that you will want to read. It's on their web site.

What Sunshine said, plus-if legal, a jig makes a good drop weight, so you can present 2 baits at once.
Is that legal in MN? I have been wondering, but haven't checked yet. Thanks for info, as it would be great if I can use it.

SSSSSSSsshhhhhh!!!!

No, tying a jig on the bottom and having a hook above is ILLEGAL in MN on those bodies of water which allow only one hook and or line.
However, it is legal on the Missippi, and other bodies of water which permit two lines.
As a matter of fact - it is one of the common ways to fish the missippi. i..e using a heavy jig to keep the line down in the current, and then using a dropper line or a hook tied directly to the line a foot or so above the jig.

I did specifically ask a DNR officer - when he checked me on the Missippi, if this rig was legal in single hook waters and he said absolutely NOT.
Take care

Thanks REW. I figured so. I can use this on St Croix tho :)

That heavy jig on bottom with floating jighead is called a Dubuque rig and you can buy them pre-packaged right in the store. I fish every so often with a guy thats all he uses. Dropshotting works great for presenting bait precisely at whatever depth you want it off bottom. The length between sinker and bait is how far off bottom you are. So if that is important to a walleye fisherman than it might help, I guess. :)

The last time I looked, it was illegal in MI also. Actually, here it is right out of the book.
"It is unlawful to have a weight suspended below ANY hook UNLESS the hook is on a dropper line (a leader) that is at least 3" long."

Chris thats why they use a heavy jighead instead of a sinker as the bottom weight. It then becomes a tandem rig, legal in most areas. But the packaged rigs have the floating jighead on a short leader.
