What do you guys like to use for hook sizes on spinner rigs? I plan on tying crawler harnesses, and single-hook setups for leeches/minnows. I got a bunch of Gamakatsu wide-gaps planning to use the size 6 for crawler harnesses, but they look a little small. If it matters I'm planing to use them on inland lakes in NW Ontario.

Thanks

I prefer to use a #2 on the front hook and a #4 on the second hook. I am sure you could use the #6's, but they are a little small in my opinion. Why not use them as the second hook and go pick up some #2's or #4's for the front?

I agree that the #6 is a bit small for a spinner rig.

If, on the other hand, you are lindy rigging, with a finesse rig, the #6's may be just fine.

The spinner rig, is much more of a reaction strike, so I doubt that the hook size makes much difference, with respect to detracting fish. Certainly a larger hook better insures a good hook up.

A couple of years ago, I was fishing an 80 foot hole in the river using a 1 oz jig, with a 1/0 hook baited with a minnow.

Now and then, mixed in with the other fish; I would catch a Sauger that weighed perhaps a 1/4 lb. Thse very small fish certainly had no problem in completly inhaling a 1 oz jig complete with the 1/0 hook and minnow. Walleyes and saugers have very large mouths, and can easily injest a large bait and or large hook.

Take care

#2-#1 spinner rigs unless your slow driftifing long line then I go smaller and make sure the crawler traks striaght not looping

you are using a wide gap so they should suffice for the back hook
of a tandem rig...
if your using power crawlers just skin hook it
#4 mininum for the front hook but nothing wrong with a #2 either
if you havent purchased alot
then go with a bigger hook and save them for rigging

Here is my 2 cents worth.

For Erie and Saginaw eyes I use a #1/0 red hook up front and A #6 excaliber treble on the back. I use 20# florocarbon line to tye my big water spinners.

On inland lakes I'll use a #2 red hook up front and a #2 black hook in back. I'll still use forocarbon for the snells but drop it down to 14# test.

I generally agree with the other guys. I typically use a larger hook up front. Lake Erie excluded I go with either a 2 or 4 up front and a 4 or 6 in the back tied on Fireline or fluorocarbon.
