Change backing with main Line?

Is there degradation I need to be aware of in my mono backing on my trolling rods. I would like to just change out the Fireline if the mono is fine.

Have you ever had to use the backing? If you have never reached the backing in your normal fishing then I would just leave it there. If you actually use it while fishing I would change it.

I agree, as long as it's not like 5 years old. Unused 2-3 year old backing should be fine. It'll break down over time just due to heat, etc, though.

If you only see your backing once a year during respooling then I wouldn't worry abiut it. I use SL27s. I respool 400ft. every year. Normally thats the only time I see the backing. KEEP A TIGHT LINE AND THE BUD COLD ERIE REBEL
