To get a decent reel for the kids, get a Zebco, any of the series from the 222 to the 33 , they will all work, and are pretty well trouble free. even the parents seem to think so. good luck and good fishin.

If he's going to be fishing from a boat, I'd get him a spinning reel right away. Take the time to show him how it works. My son is 6 also and he picked up on it well enough when he was 4. From shore, get a zebco 33, it'll handle the dirt and sand better. Personally, I bought my boy a zebco 33 triggerspin reel to get him used to reeling with his left hand when fishing from shore. In the boat he uses one of my older rods with a shimano AX on it. No big deal if he drops it overboard that way, and the reels are similar feeling to him. Seems to work pretty well.

I think the previous replies have it right. My son's first rod and reel is a 5 1/2 foot Zebco. Works great in certain applications. However, when we're pulling bottom bouncers on the Missouri River, I take out one of my old Shimano rod/reel combos for his use.

He's 5 years old now, so I guess I'll have to buy some more for myself soon so he can have some hand-me-downs }(

Skis,

I like that "hand me downs". Now I know what to tell my wife. Honey I am just getting new rods for me so the kids have something better to fish with.

My 7 year old daughter has been using a spinning real for the last two years. She saw me using one and did not want anything to do with her brothers older zebco push button hand me down.

I really like my combos, so when my daughter wanted to fish more, I bought her, her own stuff. So far, I have bought her 3 combos. Her favorite is a Daiwa Tournament SS 2600. She takes great pride in her equipment, takes very good care of everything and is always excited to go fishing.

This year, she is going to give baitcasting a try, so I got her a Garcia 5600 (has a thumbbar) and a 7 foot rod. I figure that she can learn best throwing rattlin raps and things like that.

6 might be a little young to get really expensive equipment, but I do not regret getting good rods and reels for Brianna (she is now 13 and has been using her own stuff since she was 10.)

Be sure to get you kids rainsuits. I had Breeze using a hand-me-down rainsuit and had no idea how wet she was getting. She toughed it out though, so I figured she earned her own. Saved up my Cabela's points and got her Cabela's Dri plus rain suit.

For me, there is nothing cooler than fishing and catching fish with my kids and watching them fight fish well and all that other stuff.

I go along with the selection of a spinning reel.

This reminds me of the time when my children were small.
I had a Zebco on one of the rods for the children.
After the reel jammed for about the 5th time that afternoon, I took the reel off the rod, and threw it as far as I could.

I have never had anything but spinning or bait casting reels in my boat since then.

When the other children came along, they picked up the workings of a spinning reel in the first hour of use in the boat.

Take care
