Hello everyone. Just wondering what expectations you all have when you hire a guide for a day or for an entire fishing vacation?

In other words what makes a good gude?

i expect to have a chance to catch fish, to be shown the presentaion if i don't know it and provide the tackle. for him to be ethical and follow all game laws. to be treated respectfully. if i get this i pay the fee and may even throw in a tip. if i catch fish the boat gets a tip. it doesn't hurt if we can share a few laughs.

when we lose the 2nd. amendment the others will be history too!

Just got back from Fla. and had a great guide for snook and redfish. Here's what he did:

Answered all our questions - he wasn't hiding any of his techniques.
Helped my 8 yr old nephew with the equipment and casting and landing when he wasn't helping us land our fish.
Had the bait ready to go when he picked us up.
Put us on the fish, enabling us to catch a lot! (over 30 snook, 5 redfish, jack crevelles, flounders)
Knew what the fish were before we got them to the boat.
Followed all the game and fish rules to the letter - even when our snook was 27.5 inches it went back into the bay, not the cooler.
Tried like crazy to get us a keeper, even stayed out 2 extra hours to get one keeper fish!!! We actually had to tell him that we should head back to the dock. He was pretty upset that we weren't "taking any groceries home."
Great guy altogether, easy to talk to, and worked very hard for us.

All of these were more than I was expecting.

I read this on one guides site.

What to Expect from your Fishing Experience:

Prompt arrival from your guide
Patience, courtesy, respect and friendliness
An open environment to discuss anything about the trip
A knowledgeable guide to produce fish
An enviromentally friendly experience, we leave only our wake
Demonstration of technique (if you wish)
Most of all, A GREAT DAY!

There some things you should expect and maybe take for granted, but if you are putting your $ out why not ask? Talk to the guide on what you expect and be on the same page before hitting the water.

BINGO! Some of the stuff is obvious and expected - the promptness, etc. You will have a much better experience most likely if you discuss your goals / expectations with your guide / Captain while booking the trip. Some people want a "learning" type trip, some just want a day on the water, some are "meat" fishermen, some want to learn specific techniques (maybe even it it isn't the "best" method to put fish in the boat on a particular day), etc. You should discuss your reason's for booking a trip in advance. Most of the better guides/Captain's I know try to find this out from the clients in order to plan the day - but be upfront about what you are looking for. The guide may even recommend someone else to you based on what you are looking for.
Good Luck,
Steve
