My fishing buddy has a Ranger and 200hp ficht.Graph can't get a reading at high speeds, It starts giving him trouble after about 40 MPH. Tranducer is mounted thru-hull. Is this normal or could he mount it outside the hull for better readings. My 200hp will be ready on Saturday and I want it to work properly. Thanks

With that rig at that speed - it is likely that the spot that the transducer is mounted is simply out of the water.

Take a look at the bottom of the ranger. Check out the pad. This is the part of the boat that is still going to be in the water - when you are going 60.

My guess is that at 60 - there will only be about 1-2 feet of that boat in the water. If your buddy has his transducer mounted in front of that point, you are going to lose bottom.

Remember, the key to a good transducer reading is clean unturbulated water. Try to imagine where that spot will be on the hull at all boat speeds.

If possible, do some over the transom checking -- if you are brave enough -- wear a good high speed life jacket -- only in smooth water please -- to find the areas of the boat that leave smooth water behind at top speed.

Most 60-80 mph bass boats have their transducers mounted through hull and have good readings to the top speed. Get the transducer in the right spot for your hull and you will have no problems.

Just remember to visually check to see how much of the boat is in the water - when going wide open, and make sure that the transducer is mounted at least that far aft.

Take care

Thank-you REW, I thought that was the case , however he insisted he was right.
