Eyeowa,

I just spent a few days doing a lot of polelining. It sure wears you out! We used weights ranging from 8 oz to 1 lb in 16-32 FOW and lots of current. 1# isn't enough IMO for some of the deeper, faster current situations. A short rod (4') is a must unless you are built like Arnold. We obtained weights and shanks from local Detroit bait shops. You can get the items to make shanks (I made a few) from Gander or about any other good tackle dealer. #6 clevises, 30# to 60# braided wire and matching crimping sleeves makes up the main part of the shank. A 65# or larger snap swivel is attached to the bottom of the shank to attach the dropper weight to.
If you search the archives (keywords "poleline shanks") there was a discussion with specific details on shank construction recently.
